Sections and Theme settings

The theme editor toolbar has two tabs: Sections and Theme settings. On the Sections tab, you can modify the content and layout of the different pages on your store. On the Theme settings tab, you can customize your store's fonts and colors, and make changes to your social media links and checkout settings.

Sections

Themes include both dynamic sections and fixed sections.

Dynamic sections

Dynamic sections are customizable blocks of content that you can add, reorder, and remove from your online store. Each theme has a unique set of dynamic sections to choose from, such as featured products, slideshows, featured collections, and videos. Dynamic sections exist only on the home page of your store.

Fixed sections

Fixed sections are customizable blocks of content that cannot be reordered or removed from your theme. Fixed sections include your header and footer, as well as the body content for each type of page in your theme.

All Shopify themes in the Theme Store have sections. Themes created before October 2016 do not have sections.

Add sections

You can have up to 25 sections on your home page.

To add a section to your home page:

  1. Find the theme you want to edit and click the Customize button for the theme.

  2. In the theme editor toolbar, click Add section.

  3. Click the type of section that you want to add, then click Add. Each theme has a unique set of sections to choose from.

  4. Change the section's content by adding and editing the content blocks in the toolbar.

  5. Click Save or Publish to save your changes.

When you add an image to a section, the file is added to the Files section of your admin. You can reuse an uploaded image in other sections or pages of your store.

Reorder sections

You can change the order of the dynamic sections on your home page.

To reorder sections:

  1. Find the theme you want to edit and click the Customize button for the theme.

  2. On the section that you want to move, click ⁞⁞ and drag the section to a different place:

Hide sections

You can hide sections that you don't want to display on your online store. You can hide sections that are unfinished, or that you are not ready to publish. For example, you can create a slideshow of new products, and then hide the section until you are ready to begin selling the new products. Or, you can create a section that advertises a seasonal discount, and then hide the section until the discount is active.

To hide a section:

  1. Find the theme you want to edit and click the Customize button for the theme.

  2. In the theme editor toolbar, click the eye icon for the section that you want to hide:

When a section is hidden, the eye icon has a slash through it:

To show a hidden section, click the eye icon again.

Remove sections

You can remove content from a section, or remove a section from your home page. Deleting content in this way removes the section content, but doesn't delete anything from your account. If you delete a product or collection block from a section, then that product or collection will still exist in your admin. If you delete an image in a section, you can still add that image to other sections.

Remove content from a section

To remove content from a section:

  1. Find the theme you want to edit and click the Customize button for the theme.

  2. Click the section containing the content that you want to remove.

  3. In the Content section, click the content you want to remove from the section.

  4. Click Delete [content], where [content] is the content type (collection, image, or logo, for example).

Remove a section

To remove a section:

  1. Find the theme you want to edit and click the Customize button for the theme.

  2. In the theme editor toolbar, click the section that you want to remove.

  3. Click Delete section at the bottom of the toolbar.

Undo and redo changes

The Undo button reverses your most recent change, and the Redo button adds back a change that you undid. Clicking the Undo button more than once will continue to Undo your work, one change at a time. You'll find the Undo and Redo buttons at the bottom of the theme editor:

Theme settings

You can make changes that affect every page of your theme on the Theme settings tab. Theme settings include typography (fonts), colors, and links to your social media accounts:

You can also make some changes to the theme settings from the Sections tab. For example, with some themes, you can add social media icons to the Footer section of your store. When you customize the Footer section on the Sections tab, the social media icons will be available for you to customize:

Change theme styles

A theme style is a collection of settings chosen by the theme designer that you can apply to your store to give it a polished look and feel. All themes have a theme style applied by default. When you customize a theme, you replace the theme style settings with your own. If you apply a theme style to your theme, then your current settings, such as colors and typography, will change.

To change your theme style:

  1. Find the theme you want to edit and click the Customize button for the theme.

  2. On the Theme settings tab click Change theme style.

  3. Click a theme style. If your theme includes more than one theme style, then they are listed in a column.

  4. Click Save.
