Theme designers sometimes release new, updated versions of the themes that they've published on the Theme Store. These updated versions will make changes to the old version of the theme, like adding new features or fixing bugs.
If you haven't made any code changes to your theme or installed an app that has changed your theme code, then your theme updates automatically. But if you have made any code changes to your theme, then any theme updates that the theme designer publishes won't be automatically applied to your theme. This is because automatic updates to themes remove any custom code changes. If you want to update your theme to the latest version, but you've made code changes to your theme or installed an app that has changed your theme code, then you need to manually add an updated version of the theme to your online store.
The most up-to-date versions of all themes are available in the Theme Store. If you purchased a paid theme from the Theme Store, then you can add an updated version for free. If you purchased a paid theme from a third-party theme designer, then you will need to contact the designer for updates.
Add an updated version of your theme to your online store
When you manually add an updated version of a theme, a second version of the theme is added to your online store. The new version is in its default state, with none of your customizations applied. The older version is unaffected by the update, and still has all of your code customizations.
To add an updated version of your theme:
Visit the Shopify Theme Store and log in. For paid themes, it is important to log in to the account that you used to buy the theme. This will prevent you from being asked to buy the theme again.
Use the top bar search box to search for your theme.
On the search results page, click your theme.
Click Add latest theme version.
After you add an updated theme
After you have added an updated version of your theme to your online store, you can do the following:
- Customize your theme by using the theme editor.
- Publish your theme.
- Uninstall any apps that add code to a theme, and then re-install them from the Shopify App Store. If you're not sure whether an app needs to be re-installed, then contact the app developer for support. To contact the app developer, find the app on the Apps page of your Shopify admin, click View details, and then click Get support.
