Set up address collection preferences

Activate different shipping and billing addresses

By default, during checkout, the customer's shipping address is used as the billing address field automatically, but the customer can enter a different billing address. You can change whether the billing address is filled automatically or left empty.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.

  2. In the Address collection preferences section, uncheck Use the shipping address as the billing address by default.

  3. Click Save.

Require shipping and billing address to match

For most merchants, it's recommended to allow the shipping and billing address to be different during checkout. However, you can require the shipping and billing address to match. This will prevent customers from sending gifts, and is only recommended for stores with a high amount of fraudulent orders, and is best paired with an Address Verification System.

This address requirement applies to customers paying online by credit card or Apple Pay. This address requirement doesn't apply to the following order types:

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.

  2. In the Address collection preferences section, select Require shipping and billing address to match.

  3. Click Save.

Provide autocompletion in address fields

When your customers enter their shipping or billing addresses, they can be presented with address suggestions. This feature lets your customers enter their address information faster and more accurately. These address suggestions come from services such as Google Autocomplete, not from your customer's browser. If this feature is inactive or if your customers live in a country where this feature isn't supported yet, then your customers can check out as usual by entering their addresses manually.

The default address autocompletion feature is available for your customers in the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hong Kong SAR
  • India
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Singapore
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

This feature is available to all Shopify merchants and is active by default. You can deactivate this feature in your Shopify admin using the checkout and accounts editor.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.

  2. In the Configurations section, click Customize next to the checkout configuration that you want to customize.

  3. In the checkout and accounts editor, click the gear icon to access the Settings sidebar.

  4. In the Address autocompletion section, do either of the following to manage your address autocompletion setting:

    • To deactivate address autocompletion, deselect Use address autocompletion.
    • To reactivate address autocompletion, select Use address autocompletion.
  5. Click Save.

Third-party apps for checkout address autocompletion

When you install your third-party app for address autocompletion, you can activate it in your Shopify admin using the checkout and accounts editor.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.

  2. In the Configurations section, click Customize next to the checkout configuration that you want to customize.

  3. In the checkout and accounts editor, click the gear icon to access the Settings sidebar.

  4. In the Address autocompletion section, select Use address autocompletion.

  5. Select the app that you want to use for address autocompletion at checkout.

  6. Click Save.

Validate shipping addresses at checkout

When your customers enter invalid shipping address details at checkout, you can display issues and suggestions to fix the address details at checkout automatically. Address validation suggestions are offered when there is high confidence in the address details the customer intended. This helps you reduce orders with invalid addresses, and minimize delayed or failed deliveries. If you deactivate this feature or a shipping address is outside available countries, then your customers can check out as usual. Individual address field validations, such as input requirement, format, or length, are always active for all countries and regions.

If you use a third-party address validation app, then there might be conflicting elements or suggestions at checkout. To avoid decreased checkout conversion, you should use either the shipping address validation checkout setting in your Shopify admin or a third-party app, but not both simultaneously.

The address validation feature is available for shipping addresses in the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bermuda
  • Czechia
  • Denmark
  • Faroe Islands
  • France
  • Guernsey
  • Italy
  • Liechtenstein
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovenia
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United States

Orders from unsupported countries still have their addresses inspected, but might not return as many specific address validation suggestions as those from supported countries.

This feature validates your customer's shipping address before the order is placed. Additionally, your customer's shipping address is also automatically validated after the order is placed. Learn more about validating shipping addresses on your orders.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.

  2. In the Address collection preferences section, select Validate shipping address.

  3. Click Save.

Additional address fields

Depending on the country, the following changes are made to the checkout shipping and billing address form:

  • The Address field in the checkout is replaced by additional fields for Street name and Building number. Depending on the country or region, these fields might be required.
  • An additional Neighborhood field is added. Depending on the country or region, this field might be required.
