Managing customers
When a new customer places an order with your store, their name and information are automatically added to your customer list. A customer profile is created when a customer interacts with your business in any of the following ways:
- signing up for your mailing list or a customer account
- placing an order
- starting an order, but abandoning their checkout
Alternatively, you can add a customer to your store manually.
You can send email messages to individual customers from your Shopify admin, or send discounts and email messages to groups of customers by using customer segments.

Add customer profiles
Steps:
Desktop
From your Shopify admin, go to Customers.
Click Add customer.
Enter the customer's information.
Optional: If the customer has agreed to receive marketing emails, and you have entered an email address, then in the Customer overview section, check Customer agreed to receive marketing emails.

In the Tax settings section, select whether to collect tax:
- To collect tax, select Collect tax.
- To not collect tax, select Don't collect tax.
- To collect tax except for applicable exemptions, select Collect tax unless exemptions apply, and then in the Select exemptions drop-down menu select the tax exemptions.
Click Save.
iPhone
- From the Shopify app, tap the … button, and then tap Customers.
- Tap All customers.
- Tap the + button.
- Enter the customer's information.
- If you charge the customer sales tax, then activate Collects Tax.
- Tap Save.
- Optional: If the customer has agreed to receive marketing emails, and you have entered an email address, then do the following:
- In the Email Marketing section, tap Edit status.
- Tap Customer agreed to receive email marketing.
- Tap ✓.
- If the customer is located in Canada and is exempt from sales tax, then tap the pencil icon and do the following:
- In the Tax exemptions section, tap Manage.
- Tap the all the tax exemptions that apply to this customer.
- Tap ✓.
Android
- From the Shopify app, tap the ☰ button, and then tap Customers.
- Tap All customers.
- Tap the + button.
- Enter the customer's information.
- If you charge the customer sales tax, then activate Collects Tax.
- Tap Save.
- Optional: If the customer has agreed to receive marketing emails, and you have entered an email address, then do the following:
- In the Email Marketing section, tap Edit status.
- Tap Customer agreed to receive email marketing.
- Tap ✓.
- If the customer is located in Canada and is exempt from sales tax, then tap the pencil icon and do the following:
- In the Tax exemptions section, tap Manage.
- Tap the all the tax exemptions that apply to this customer.
- Tap ✓.
Send an email message to a customer
You can send an email message to a customer directly from your Shopify admin or from the Shopify app.
Steps:
Desktop
From your Shopify admin, go to Customers.
Click the customer name.
In the Customer overview section, click the customer's email address.
Edit the subject line for the email, or leave it as the default. The code
shop.name
automatically enters your store's name into subject line of the email message.In the Custom message field, enter your message.
To receive a copy of the message for your records, under Send bcc to, check the appropriate email addresses.
When you are finished, click Review Email.
Click Send notification.
iPhone
- From the Shopify app, tap the … button, and then tap Customers.
- Tap All customers.
- Tap the customer name.
- In the Customer Overview section, tap Email.
- To receive a copy of the message for your records, in the Cc field, enter your email address.
- Edit the subject line and body of the email.
- Review the email message, and then send it.
Android
- From the Shopify app, tap the ☰ button, and then tap Customers.
- Tap All customers.
- Tap the customer name.
- In the Customer Overview section, tap Email.
- To receive a copy of the message for your records, in the Cc field, enter your email address.
- Edit the subject line and body of the email.
- Review the email message, and then send it.
Review sent emails
After an email is sent to a customer, a notification is displayed in the customer's timeline. If the email was not successfully sent, then a warning icon (ⓘ) is displayed next to the notification.
You can review a sent email, and resend a copy of the email either to the customer or to yourself.
Steps:
Desktop
From your Shopify admin, go to Customers.
Click the customer name.
In the Timeline section, locate the notification that an email has been sent.
Click View email.

Optional: To resend an email, do one of the following:
- To send the email a customer, select Customer, and then click Resend.
- To send the email to yourself, select Yourself, and then click Resend.
iPhone
- From the Shopify app, tap the … button, and then tap Customers.
- Tap Customers.
- Tap a customer.
- In the Timeline section, locate the notification that an email has been sent.
- Optional: To resend an email, do one of the following:
- To send the email a customer, select Customer, and then tap Resend.
- To send the email to yourself, select Yourself, and then tap Resend.
Android
- From the Shopify app, tap the ☰ button, and then tap Customers.
- Tap Customers.
- Tap a customer.
- In the Timeline section, locate the notification that an email has been sent.
- Optional: To resend an email, do one of the following:
- To send the email a customer, select Customer, and then tap Resend.
- To send the email to yourself, select Yourself, and then tap Resend.
Edit customer profiles
If a customer profile already exists in Shopify, then you can edit the profile from the Customers page.
Before you update a customer profile, verify if another staff member is currently making changes to the same profile so that your changes don't conflict.
You can add a note to a customer profile to keep track of special information about the customer. Only staff members of your store can access these notes. These notes aren't visible to customers.
Using tags can help you to organize your customer profile list. You can use tags to label your customers by using descriptive terms or to sort them into categories. For example, if you have important customers, then you can tag those customers as VIP
. Tags can also be used to create customer segments. Tags are not case sensitive.
Steps:
Desktop
From your Shopify admin, go to Customers.
Click the customer name.
To add a note to the customer profile, in the Customer Note field, enter the appropriate information about the customer, and then click Save.

In the Customer overview section, click Manage > Edit contact information and then make the appropriate changes to the following information:
- first name
- last name
- language
- email address
- phone number

To edit the address, in the Customer overview section, click Manage > Manage addresses and do one of the following:
- To edit the current address, click Edit next to the appropriate address.
- To change which address is the default address, click Set as default next to the appropriate address.
- To add a new address to the profile, click Add new address.

To edit your customer tax settings, do the following steps:
- In the Customer section, click …, and then click Manage tax settings.
- In the Tax setting drop-down menu, select whether to collect tax:
- To collect tax, select Collect tax.
- To not collect tax, select Don't collect tax.
- To collect tax except for applicable exemptions, select Collect tax unless exemptions apply, and then in the Select exemptions drop-down menu select the tax exemptions.
- Click Save.
To change whether the customer receives email marketing, in the Customer overview section, click Manage > Edit marketing settings.

To apply tags to the customer profile, in the Tags section, do either of the following:
- To add a tag, click the field, and then select a tag.
- To remove a tag, click the X next to a tag.
iPhone
- From the Shopify app, tap the … button, and then tap Customers.
- Tap All customers.
- Tap the customer name.
- To add a note to the customer profile, in the Note section, tap the Edit field, enter the appropriate information about the customer, and then tap Save.
- To change information about the customer, in the Contact information section, tap …, and then do any of the following actions:
- To edit an address, tap Edit addresses, and then tap the address that you want to edit. Change the first name, last name, or phone number, and then tap Save.
- To add a new address to the profile, tap Edit addresses, and then tap +. Add the new address, and then tap Save.
- To edit contact information, tap Edit contact information. Change the first name, last name, email address, or phone number, and then tap Save.
- To edit tax collection, tap Tax exemptions, and then tap Edit next to the market that you want to edit. Tap to select any exemptions that you want, and then tap Save.
- To change whether the customer receives email marketing, tap Marketing subscriptions, and then tap to turn on the marketing options that you want to apply to the customer. Tap Save.
- To edit tags to the customer profile, tap Tags, tap the search field, and then do any of the following actions:
- Enter the new tag name, and then tap Add
. Tap Save. - Search for a tag or select a tag using the checkbox. Tap Save.
- Enter the new tag name, and then tap Add
Android
- From the Shopify app, tap the ☰ button, and then tap Customers.
- Tap All customers.
- Tap the customer name.
- To add a note to the customer profile, in the Note section, tap the Add note field, enter the appropriate information about the customer, and then tap ✓ to save.
- To change information about the customer, in the Contact information section, tap ⋮, and then do any of the following actions:
- To edit an address, tap Edit addresses, and then tap the address that you want to edit. Change the first name, last name, or phone number.
- To add a new address to the profile, tap Edit addresses, and then tap +. Add the new address, and then tap ✓ to save.
- To edit contact information, tap Edit contact information. Change the first name, last name, email address, or phone number, and then tap ✓ to save.
- To edit tax collection, tap Tax exemptions, and then tap Edit next to the market that you want to edit. Tap to select any exemptions that you want, and then tap ✓ to save.
- To change whether the customer receives email marketing, tap Marketing subscriptions, and then tap to turn on the marketing options that you want to apply to the customer. Tap ✓ to save.
- To edit tags to the customer profile, tap Tags, tap the search field, and then do any of the following actions:
- Enter the new tag name, and then tap Add
