Creating amount off discounts

You can create discounts that give your customers a fixed value or a percentage off the products in an order, but that don't apply to shipping costs. These discounts are called amount off discounts.

If your discount is set to discount all products, then the discount is applied proportionally across all items in the cart. For example, if you have a $50 discount applied to a cart with a $50 and a $100 item, then the first item is discounted by $16.50 and the second one by $33.50. If the total price of the order is less than $50, then the value of each item is discounted to $0. The order value can't go below $0.

The time when the discount starts and ends depends on the time zone that you select in your Shopify admin. For example, if your store’s time zone is Eastern Standard Time (EST) and you select a start date of November 26, then your discount starts at 12:00 a.m. EST on November 26.

Create an amount off automatic discount

Considerations for amount off automatic discounts

Before you create an automatic percentage or fixed value discount, review the following considerations:

  • If you want to offer an automatic discount for your retail locations, then you need to create the discount in your Shopify admin. Automatic discounts only apply to retail locations with a POS Pro subscription. You can't have an automatic discount which only applies to your retail locations. If you select this option, then the discount works both in your online store and on Shopify POS.
  • When you apply the discount to a collection, note that collections can't hold individual product variants. If you add a product variant to a discounted collection, then the discount applies to every version of the product.
  • If the discount applies to a specific product or collection, then only these items contribute to the minimum purchase or quantity amounts.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Discounts.

  2. Click Create discount.

  3. From the Select discount type menu, click Amount off products or Amount off orders.

  4. Under Method, select Automatic discount.

  5. In the Title section, enter a name for the automatic discount. For example, 15offnecklaces.

  6. Optional: To offer this discount for your retail locations, select Also offer on Point of Sale (POS Pro locations only). Automatic discounts apply only to retail locations with a POS Pro subscription. If you have some locations with a POS Lite subscription, then the automatic discounts aren't available in their checkout.

  7. In the Discount value section, enter a monetary or percentage value for the discount.

  8. Optional: If you have subscriptions set up on your store, then under Purchase type you can select if the discount applies to One-time purchase, Subscription or Both.

  9. Optional: To apply an amount off product discount to specific products or collections, in the Applies to section, do one of the following actions:

    • To apply a discount to specific products, select Specific products, and then add your products.
    • To apply a discount to specific collections, select Specific collections, and then add your collections.
  10. Optional: If you're creating a fixed amount automatic discount that can be applied to specific products or collections, then you can check Only apply discount once per order to limit the number of times the discount applies. Otherwise, the discount applies to all eligible products in the order.

  11. Set a minimum requirement for the discount:

    • Minimum purchase amount requires customers to spend a minimum amount to qualify for the discount.
    • Minimum quantity of items requires customers to order a minimum number of products to qualify for the discount.
  12. To let customers combine this discount code with other discount codes, in the Combinations section, check the classes of discount codes that you want this discount to be eligible to combine with.

  13. Use the calendar in the Active dates section to set the start date for the discount. If you want to set an end date for the discount, then click Set end date and use the calendar to choose when the discount ends.

  14. Click Save discount.
