Set up automatic redirection for your visitors
Markets using dedicated domains
If your market is set up with a dedicated domain, subdomain, or subfolder, the automatic redirection setting will automatically detect a visitor's geolocation and redirect them to the URL that corresponds to their resolved market. For example, if you use a .com
domain for your United States market and a .ca
domain for your Canada market, then a Canadian visitor who visits johns-apparel.com
is automatically redirected to johns-apparel.ca
.
For markets using dedicated domains, their content is automatically indexed by search engines.
Markets using shared domains
If your market is set up to share the same domain as another market ("Use primary market configuration"), then the automatic redirection setting will automatically detect a visitor's geolocation and adjust their page to display content (such as currencies and language) that corresponds to their resolved market. For example, if your primary market is United States with USD (johns-apparel.com
), and you have an secondary market for Canada with CAD currency that is set use primary market's domain, then a Canadian visitor who visits johns-apparel.com
will automatically see CAD pricing.
For markets using shared domains, their content won't be indexed by search engines.
Steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Markets.
- Select Preferences.
- Toggle on Automatic redirection.
After you activate automatic redirection, visitors to your online store will automatically be shown their region-specific content.
You can also let customers switch manually between languages and currencies by adding a country selector to your online store. If your theme doesn't have a country selector, then you can add one by using the free Geolocation app or another country selector app that supports Shopify Markets.
