Activate Managed Markets

With Managed Markets, you can sell internationally with duties, taxes, and compliance managed on your behalf. If you meet the requirements, then you can activate Managed Markets directly from your Shopify admin. Managed Markets makes multiple changes to your store, so you should review the changes before you adopt Managed Markets.

Before you activate Managed Markets

Before you activate Managed Markets, make sure that you understand the following changes that Managed Markets will make to your online store:

  • Local payment methods are added to your checkout.

  • Customer's phone number is collected at checkout for Managed Markets orders.
  • Shipping with prepaid duties is used at checkout. In the United States, shipping is available with DHL Express, DHL eCommerce, UPS, and FedEx. In the United Kingdom and Canada, shipping is available with DHL Express and FedEx.
  • Disclaimer is added to checkout that states Global-e is the merchant of record for the transaction on international orders.

  • 136 currencies are accepted in your online store.
  • Automatic domain redirection is activated to give international customers the best storefront experience.
  • All your international orders are protected from fraud chargebacks with Shopify Protect (United States only).
Payments
  • Payments are processed daily with Shopify Payments.
  • Managed Markets shipping labels have a new transaction type in payouts.
  • Managed Markets becomes your merchant of record for international orders in selected markets.

Activate Managed Markets

You can activate Managed Markets directly from the Markets page in your Shopify admin. After you complete the activation steps, Managed Markets is immediately active for your selected markets.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click Managed Markets.

  3. Optional: Review the changes that Managed Markets makes to your store.

  4. Click Start selling internationally.

  5. Review the new market created for Managed Markets. By default, this market is called Rest of World and includes all regions that are eligible for Managed Markets, but you can change your market name and remove countries and regions from the list of included regions.

  6. Optional: Click Product eligibility to review your products. If you have products listed as Partially supported or Unsupported, then you can hover your mouse over Details to determine where the product is restricted, and why.

  7. Optional: Click Shipping labels to review Global-e's shipping labels and rates. Click Download rates to download a CSV file with Managed Markets shipping rates.

  8. Click Save.

After you activate Managed Markets, your store is updated immediately. Learn more about how to set up Managed Markets.

Turning off Managed Markets

If you no longer want to use Managed Markets for your international orders, then you can turn off Managed Markets.

Considerations for turning off Managed Markets

Before you turn off Managed Markets, review the following considerations:

  • Your final payout can be held up to 90 days to account for potential refunds or chargebacks.
  • Orders created prior to turning off Managed Markets still need to be fulfilled through Managed Markets. Orders placed afterward can use other fulfillment methods.
  • Orders created prior to turning off Managed Markets can't be edited after Managed Markets is deactivated.
  • Cancel any pickup schedules that you set up for Managed Markets orders.
  • Only store owners can turn off Managed Markets.

Changes to your store

Review the following changes to your store after you turn off Managed Markets:

  • Collection of duties and taxes are deactivated in your store.
  • HS codes that were automatically added to your products by Managed markets are removed. HS codes that you added manually are retained. Review your product information after deactivating Managed Markets.
  • Your default country or region of origin (COO) isn't changed. This includes the default COO that's assigned by Managed Markets if you didn't have one when you activated Managed Markets. Review your default COO after deactivating Managed Markets.
  • Local payments methods available through Managed Markets are removed from your store.
  • Product, country, and currency restrictions managed by Managed Markets are lifted. You're responsible for keeping track of and complying with restrictions and regulations yourself.
  • Your customers continue to place orders in their local currency in all your current markets.
  • DHL eCommerce shipping rates are removed from your checkout and the label cost of DHL Express and UPS is changed. Review and update your shipping rates and your markets.

Turn off Managed Markets

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click the market that you want to deactivate Managed Markets for.

  3. Review the changes that are made to your market after you turn off Managed Markets.

  4. Optional: Select a reason for deactivating Managed Markets.

  5. Click Deactivate.

You can activate Managed Markets again from Markets in your Shopify admin.
