Fulfilling local delivery orders from the admin

From your Shopify admin you can manage local delivery orders, prepare them for delivery, and update their order statuses.

Local delivery workflow and statuses

As you fulfill your local delivery orders, they progress through the following order statuses:

  • Unfulfilled: Order preparation and fulfillment haven't started. Your next step is to prepare the order for delivery by picking and packing the items. You can also choose to print packing slips to include with the order. To finish, mark the order as Ready for delivery.

  • Ready for delivery: The order is about to be delivered, or is out for delivery. Orders might also have this status if delivery was attempted, but the order wasn't successfully delivered. After the order is delivered, your next step is to mark it as delivered.

  • Delivered: After you mark the order as delivered, the order status changes to Fulfilled and the fulfillment process is complete.

Sort and filter delivery orders

From the orders list, you can filter orders to view local delivery orders only.

Click the Local delivery tab at the top of your orders list for a list of local delivery orders that are Unfulfilled and Ready for delivery. You can use this list to prepare orders for delivery.

View delivery instructions

Your customers have the option to add delivery instructions to orders at checkout. These instructions can help you find delivery locations and give you extra information about where to leave the package.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders.

  2. Click the order you want view.

  3. Under Delivery instructions, you can read any instructions left by your customer at checkout.

Prepare an order for delivery

After a customer places an order for local delivery, you or a member of your staff need to collect and pack the items.

You can also print a packing slip to attach to the order.

After you prepare an order, mark it as ready for delivery.

You can use the Local Delivery app to optimize the delivery route for you or your staff.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders.

  2. Click the order that you want to fulfill.

  3. Click Prepare delivery.

  4. Optional: To print a packing slip, click Print packing slip.

  5. Pick and pack the items for delivery.

  6. Click Mark as ready for delivery.

Mark an order as delivered

When an order is delivered, you need to mark the order as delivered within Shopify. This changes the order status and signals to you and your staff that the order was delivered and no further action is required.

Marking the order as delivered also sends a notification to your customer so they know that the order arrived.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders.

  2. Click the order that you want to mark as delivered.

  3. Click Mark as delivered.

Cancel a delivery

When you cancel a delivery, the status of the order changes from Ready for delivery to Unfulfilled.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders.

  2. From the Orders page, click the order in the list that has a Fulfillment status of Ready for delivery.

  3. In the fulfillment details, click More.

  4. Click Cancel delivery.
