Consent and opt outs

Although cookies and other tracking data helps to power analytics, personalization, and marketing, some locations require customers to give consent before their data is collected. Data required to operate the storefront and checkout are always collected, and isn't affected by consent or data sale opt-out. For details cookies, refer to the cookie policy.

You can access two features in your Shopify admin at Online Store > Preferences > Customer Privacy: consent and data sale opt outs.

On this page

The following two options control how customer consent is used to control data collection and is applied to customers from the following countries:

  • European Economic Area (EEA): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden
  • United Kingdom

Data is collected before a customer gives consent. This might not meet applicable data protection and privacy laws and is the maximum possible data collection.

Data isn't collected until a customer gives consent, as required by data protection and privacy laws. This option results in less data available for analytics and marketing campaigns. Consent is given and honored for specific purposes: analytics, personalization and marketing.

Data sale opt out

Under certain US State privacy laws, customers have the right to opt out of the sharing or sale of their data. When a customer requests an opt out or uses Global Privacy Control (GPC), marketing pixels are blocked or updated to respect their opt out. Learn more about US State Privacy Laws.

Data sale opt out is supported in the following US states:

  • California
  • Virginia
  • Connecticut
  • Colorado
