Managing gift card settings

You can activate Apple Wallet Passes, choose whether to send gift cards by default, change gift card expiry settings, and set up automatic fulfillment for gift cards in Shopify.

Manage your gift card expiry settings

Gift cards can be set to expire after a specific amount of time. By default, gift cards don't expire because it's illegal in some countries for gift cards to expire. If you set an expiry date, then by default the cards expire after five years. However, you can change the length of the expiry date.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Gift Cards.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. In the Default expiration section, do either of the following:
    • If you don't want your gift cards to expire, then select Gift cards never expire.
    • To set expiration terms for your gift cards, select Gift cards expire, and then set the expiration details for your gift cards.
  4. Click Save.

Manage Send by default settings for gift card emails

You can use the Send by default setting to manage whether you want to send customers an email by default after you create a gift card.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Gift Cards.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. In the Send by default section, select or deselect Preselect "Send gift card now" when manually creating gift cards.
  4. Click Save.

Activate Apple Wallet Passes

You can activate Apple Wallet Passes to allow customers to use their gift cards on their iOS devices in Apple Wallet. With Passes, customers can check a gift card's balance and redeem a gift card in-store.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Gift Cards.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. In the Apple Wallet section, check Activate Apple Wallet Passes for gift cards.
  4. Optional: If you want to customize the appearance of your gift cards in Apple Wallet, then make changes to the text, color, and image settings. You can change these settings at any time.
  5. Click Save.

After you activate Apple Wallet Passes, emailed gift cards include an Add to Apple Wallet button.

Deactivate Apple Wallet Passes

After you deactivate Apple Wallet Passes for a gift card product, new gift cards won't include the Add to Apple Wallet button, but existing Apple Wallet Passes can still be redeemed.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Gift Cards.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. In the Apple Wallet Passes section, uncheck Activate Apple Wallet Passes for gift cards.
  4. Click Save.

Customer experience

Your customers can download Apple Wallet Passes to their iOS device from the notification email that they receive when they buy a gift card. Emailed gift cards include an Add to Apple Wallet button. Customers can click the button to open the gift card automatically in Apple Wallet.

The Pass displays your store information, the gift card's active balance, and a unique QR code.

When a customer presents a gift card using Apple Wallet, you can scan the QR code with a 2D scanner, or the camera on an iPad when you are using the Shopify POS app.

Customers who have downloaded Passes can receive notifications on their iOS device when they're near your store. Customers can deactivate these notifications from within Apple Wallet on the Pass's details screen. The details screen also displays your store's terms of service.

Update automatic fulfillment settings of gift cards

By default, gift cards are set to be fulfilled automatically when an order is paid, and the customer receives a notification email. You can change the fulfillment setting to manually fulfill all items in the order, including gift cards.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
  2. In the Order processing section, select Do not automatically fulfill any of the order's line items. Learn more about fulfillment settings.
  3. Click Save.
