Gift card settings

You can change gift card expiry settings, activate Apple Wallet Passes, and set up automatic fulfillment for gift cards in Shopify.

Manage your gift card expiry settings

Gift cards can be set to expire after a specific amount of time. By default, gift cards don't expire because it's illegal in some countries for gift cards to expire. If you set an expiry date, then by default the cards expire after five years. However, you can change the length of the expiry date.

Caution

Before you change your gift card expiry settings, verify that you're following the rules and regulations for gift cards in your country.

Steps:

Desktop

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
2. In the Default expiration section, do either of the following:
   • If you don't want your gift cards to expire, then select Gift cards never expire.
   • To set expiration terms for your gift cards, select Gift cards expire, and then set the expiration details for your gift cards.
3. Click Save.

Activate Apple Wallet Passes

You can activate Apple Wallet Passes to allow customers to use their gift cards on their iOS devices in Apple Wallet. With Passes, customers can check a gift card's balance and redeem a gift card in-store.

Note

Any customizations that you make to your Apple Wallet Passes also display in Passes that customers have already downloaded.

Steps:

Desktop

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
2. In the Apple wallet passes section, click Customize.
3. Check the option to Activate Apple Wallet Passes for gift cards.
4. Optional: If you want to customize the appearance of your gift cards in Apple Wallet, then make changes to the text, color, and image settings. You can change these settings at any time.
5. Click Save.

After you activate Apple Wallet Passes, emailed gift cards include an Add to Apple Wallet button.

Deactivate Apple Wallet Passes

After you deactivate Apple Wallet Passes for a gift card product, new gift cards won't include the Add to Apple Wallet button, but existing Apple Wallet Passes can still be redeemed.

Steps:

Desktop

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
2. In the Apple wallet passes section, click Customize.
3. Uncheck Activate Apple Wallet Passes for gift cards.
4. Click Save.

Update automatic fulfillment settings of gift cards

By default, gift cards are set to be fulfilled automatically when an order is paid, and the customer receives a notification email. You can change the fulfillment setting to manually fulfill all items in the order, including gift cards.

Steps:

Desktop

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
2. In the Order processing section, select Do not automatically fulfill any of the order's line items. Learn more about fulfillment settings.
3. Click Save.

Note

If an order is medium or high risk, then gift cards in that order aren't automatically fulfilled. You can fulfill the gift cards manually from the order's detail page.
