Retail sales reports

You can use the Retail Sales reports to review information about your customers' point of sale orders based on criteria such as product, SKU, or staff.

The reports include only sales that were made at a POS location. Other sales are excluded from the reports.

When you open a retail sales report, the data is up to date, give or take about 1 minute. You can reopen or refresh the report to display newer data.

POS total sales by product

The POS total sales by product report displays the breakdown of total sales of your products, but does not include shipping.

Shipping isn't included because an order can consist of several products, but has a single shipping charge. For reporting purposes, the shipping charge can't be apportioned between the products in the order.

Because shipping amounts are filtered out, the tax that is displayed in this report does not include taxes on shipping.

The sales reports use several common terms. This report uses the following additional terms:

Sometimes the data in the product fields, such as Product type or Product title, is represented as a dash (—). This occurs if the data didn't exist at the time of the order.

Custom sale items in reports

Shopify POS offers you the option of adding a custom sale item to allow you to add any additional price to an in-person sale, such as a custom surcharge or to sell an item that isn't in your usual product catalog.

However, because of the limited information that's stored about the custom sale item, these sales don't display the same way as a regular product sale does in a report.

Unlike regular products, a custom sale item's Product title, Product vendor, and Product type values are all None. If you choose to assign a title to the custom sale item before adding it to the cart, then the title is the Product title at time of sale value. If you choose not to assign a title to the custom sale item, then the Product title at time of sale value defaults to Custom sale.

You can use these values to help you customize your reports to include and display the custom sale item information the way that you want them to display. Learn more about customizing your reports.

Example: Customize the POS total sales by product report to include custom sale items

By default, the POS total sales by product report uses the filter Product title is not None, meaning custom sale items are excluded from the sales report. You can customize your sales report to include the custom sale items by removing that filter, and adjusting the dimensions to clearly separate the custom sale items by their title.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Analytics > Reports.

  2. Click the POS total sales by product report.

  3. In the configuration panel's Filters menu, click the trashbin icon next to the Product title is not None filter to remove it. This adds 1 row in the data table for all of the custom sale item sales, totalled together, because they have a Product title of None.

  4. To split the custom sale items by their titles, in the configuration panel's Dimensions menu, do the following actions:

    1. Click .
    2. Search for the Product title at time of sale dimension, and then select it.
    3. Click Apply.
  5. Optional: Click Save as to save your custom report.

Your custom sale items now display with the Product title of None, and are split up by their different titles using the Product title at time of sale dimension.
