Timeline

With Timeline, you can view detailed histories and write notes and comments for orders, draft orders, customers, and transfers in Shopify. All notes and comments are internal and will not be visible to your customers. If you use the Shopify app, then you can receive notifications whenever you're mentioned in a Timeline comment.

Communicate with Timeline

All communication with Timeline is internal to your store.

  • When you comment on something in your Shopify admin, the comment is attached to that order, draft order, customer, or transfer.
  • If you @mention another staff, then that staff gets an email notification with your comment.
  • If you @mention another staff who uses the Shopify app, then that staff gets a push notification on their phone with your comment.
  • If you don't @mention anyone, then Shopify does not notify anyone about your comment.

Add comments to Timeline

You can add comments to orders, draft orders, customers, and transfers.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin:
    • click Orders (or press G O) to see your orders.
    • click Orders, then click Drafts to see your draft orders.
    • click Customers (or press G C) to see your customers.
    • click Products, then click Transfers (or press G P T) to see your transfers.
  2. Click the order, draft order, customer, or transfer that you want to add a comment to.
  3. In the Timeline section, click to select the box labeled Leave a comment....
  4. Enter your comment. In the comment text, you can link to staff, orders, customers, or products.
  5. Click Post to add your comment.

Use emojis on Timeline

You can use emojis in your conversations.

Steps:

  1. While writing a comment, click the button in the comment box.
  2. Click the emoji that you want to add to your comment.

Mention staff on Timeline

You can @mention your store's staff in comments. Staff will get email notifications when they are mentioned in a comment. If they use the Shopify app and they have push notifications activated, then they'll also receive an alert on their mobile device.

Steps:

  1. While writing a comment, enter an @, and then start typing a staff's name. Shopify suggests staff who match what you enter.
  2. If Shopify suggests multiple names, then use the down and up arrow keys to select a name, and press enter or return to confirm your choice.

Attach files to your Timeline

You can attach files to add context or more information to your conversations. For example:

  • You can attach a photo of an item to show its condition before shipping.
  • You can attach copies of your inventory transfer receipts to keep all the information in the same place.
  • You can attach a photo of a QR code on a shipping label.

Steps:

  1. While writing a comment, click the paper clip icon in the comment box.
  2. Choose the file that you want to attach using the dialog box, and then click Open.

The file is attached as part of your comment.

Add a profile photo to appear on your Timeline

You can also add a custom photo to your profile so that it appears next to your comments.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click your username and account picture.

  2. Click Manage account.

  3. Click Upload photo.

  4. In the dialog box, find the image that you want to use, and then click Open.

  5. Click Save to confirm the changes to your profile.

  2. Swipe the screen down to the Timeline section and the comment field appears.
  3. Enter your comment, and then tap the post button.

Steps:

  1. From the Shopify app Orders screen, tap the order with the comment that you want to edit.
  2. Tap the button beside the comment.
  3. Tap Edit comment.
  4. Edit your comment, and then tap Save.

Delete comments

Steps:

  1. From the Shopify app Orders screen, tap the order with the comment that you want to delete.
  2. Tap the button beside the comment.
  3. Tap Delete comment.
  4. Tap Delete to confirm.

Activate Timeline notifications

You can use the Shopify app to activate Timeline notifications so that you receive an alert on your iPhone whenever another staff @mentions you.

Steps:

  1. From the Shopify app, tap the button, and then tap Settings.
  2. In the App settings section, tap Notifications.
  3. In the Push notifications section, activate Timeline mentions.

Add an attachment to Timeline

You can attach files to add context or more information to your conversations. There are a few reasons that you might want to attach files to your conversations:

  • You can attach a photo of an item to show its condition before shipping.
  • You can attach copies of your inventory transfer receipts to keep all the information in the same place.
  • You can attach a photo of a QR code on a shipping label.

Steps:

  1. While adding a comment, tap the attachment button.
  2. Select a file from one of the available sources.
    • Select one of your recent images.
    • Tap Take a photo to take a new photo with your iPhone's camera.
    • Tap Choose from library to access all of the images on your iPhone.
    • Tap Import file from... to browse your files stored on a cloud-based service.
  3. Enter a comment to accompany the attachment.
  4. Tap the post button.

Activate Timeline notifications

You can use the Shopify app to activate Timeline notifications so that you receive an alert on your Android whenever another staff @mentions you.

Steps:

  1. From the Shopify app, tap the button, and then tap Settings.
  2. In the App settings section, tap Store notifications.
  3. In the Push notifications section, activate the Timeline mentions option.
  4. Tap the check mark to save your changes.
