Using passkeys

Passkeys are a more secure replacement for passwords. They allow you to log in to an account without entering a password, but are safer and more efficient than a password. Using passkeys removes the possibility of forgetting and needing to reset a password, or entering the wrong password and becoming locked out of your account.

Using a passkey can help you avoid phishing scams, as well as having your password stolen.

You can add a passkey using any authentication method that you use to unlock your device, such as a fingerprint or face recognition, or a device PIN.

Passkeys can be synced across devices that are logged into the same platform. For example, if you create a passkey using an iPhone, then you can access the same passkey on your other Apple devices via iCloud. You can also use the same passkey on another platform by scanning a QR Code.

Create a passkey

You can add only one passkey per platform. For example, if you are logged into the same Apple ID on your iPhone and your MacBook Air, then both devices use the same passkey.

Desktop
  1. From your Shopify admin, click your store name in the top-right, and then click Manage account.
  2. Click Security.
  3. In the Passkeys section, click Create a passkey.
  4. Verify your account password, and then tap Next.
  5. Tap Continue and then authenticate by using any available authentication method that you use to unlock your device.
Mobile
  1. From your Shopify mobile app, tap your store name in the top-left, and then tap your username.
  2. In your Account page, tap Manage account.
  3. Tap Security.
  4. In the Passkeys section, tap Create a passkey.
  5. Verify your account password, and then tap Next.
  6. Tap Continue and then authenticate by using any available authentication method that you use to unlock your device.

After a passkey is created, it's added to the Passkeys section of the Security tab of your Shopify account. In this section, you can check which passkeys are available across your devices. If a passkey marked as Synced across devices, then it's automatically available on other devices that are logged into the same platform. If a passkey is marked as Device only, then it's only available on that device.
