Managing your inventory

Inventory is the quantity of a particular product that is available for sale.

Inventory tracking can help you avoid selling products that have run out of stock, or let you know when you need to order or make more of your product. You can set up inventory tracking, view your inventory, and adjust your inventory counts in the Inventory area of Shopify.

While Shopify can track your inventory and display these numbers in your Shopify admin, if you'd like to receive direct notifications of low stock levels, then check out the Shopify App Store.

Set up inventory tracking

To set up inventory tracking for a product:

If you're using Shopify POS, you can continue selling products when inventory reaches zero and below. This is because the Shopify POS app assumes you have the inventory on hand if you are selling in person.

View your product inventory

You can view the inventory counts for your product variants on the Inventory page.

You can also view product inventory on the Products page, in the form of a combined inventory count for all variants of each product.

You can search for variants or use filters to display a set of variants on the Inventory page. You can filter variants by Visibility, Product type, Product vendor, Inventory quantity, or Tagged with. Learn how to add tags to your products to speed up inventory management.

Adjust inventory with in place editing

You can change the inventory count for one or more product variants on the Inventory page:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products, then click Inventory.

  2. Under Update quantity, make changes to a product's inventory count. There are two ways to make changes to your inventory:

    • Click add and enter a number to add to the inventory. Negative numbers can be used to subtract from the inventory.
    • Click set to enter a new total inventory. The new total can be previewed under Quantity:
      Track inventory 5

  3. Click Save.
