Shipping insurance for your Shopify Shipping labels

If you ship orders from the United States and you buy Shopify Shipping labels, then you can protect your orders by purchasing shipping insurance for up to $5,000 USD of insurance coverage. Shipping insurance protects your shipments against loss, theft, or damage.

You can insure your shipment when buying shipping labels and submit your claims directly from the Shopify admin. Shipsurance is the insurance administrator for coverage that you buy through Shopify.

Eligibility for shipping insurance

You need to meet the following requirements to be eligible for shipping insurance:

To receive up to $200 USD of included shipping insurance on each eligible label at no cost, you also need to meet the following requirements:

  • Have Shopify Payments activated on your store.
  • To receive included shipping insurance on labels purchased through Shopify Shipping, your store needs to be on the Shopify, Advanced Shopify, or Plus plan.
  • To receive included shipping insurance on labels purchased through Managed Markets, Managed Markets must be activated.

Included shipping insurance

If you have Shopify Payments activated and your store is on the Shopify, Advanced Shopify, or Plus plan, then up to $200 USD of shipping insurance is automatically included on each eligible label at no cost. The included shipping insurance applies only to labels purchased through Shopify Shipping.

If you use Managed Markets, then your labels for Managed Markets orders also include up to $200 USD of shipping insurance. The included shipping insurance applies only to labels purchased through Managed Markets. If you use Managed Markets and your store is on the Basic plan, then insurance is not included, but you can purchase insurance for your orders.

When you purchase a shipping label, the included shipping insurance displays in the SHIPPING INSURANCE section. If your order's value is over $200 USD, then you can purchase insurance for the full shipment value or add a custom amount.

Buying shipping insurance

If you're not eligible for the included shipping insurance, then you can enter the amount of shipping insurance coverage that you want to add to your shipment in SHIPPING INSURANCE section. Before you buy shipping insurance, review the following considerations:

  • You can buy shipping insurance in increments of $100 USD. For example, if you want to insure your items valued at $250 USD total and you're using international shipping that cost $20.50 USD, then you can add insurance for $270.50 USD to your shipping label. The cost of the insurance premium is $1.29 USD x 3 (per $100 USD of coverage), for a total of $3.87 USD.
  • Your shipping insurance and shipping label charges are listed separately on the Billing page in the Shopify admin.
  • You can cancel shipping insurance by voiding the unused shipping label up to 30 days after the label purchase. After you cancel the insurance, you can't submit a claim anymore and you receive a shipping insurance premium credit. This credit can be used only for future shipping insurance purchases.
  • USPS First Class Mail shipping service isn't eligible for insurance.
  • Shipments sent using UPS services to destinations in Puerto Rico aren't eligible for insurance.

Submitting a shipping insurance claim

You can submit a shipping insurance claim for lost, damaged, and stolen shipments directly in your Shopify admin. Before you submit a shipping insurance claim, review the following considerations:

  • If shipping insurance was purchased or included for a shipping label that also has coverage provided by the carrier, then any claims for lost, damaged, or stolen shipments should be filed with Shipsurance and not the carrier.
  • Additional shipping insurance either included or purchased separately for a shipping label does not stack or combine with coverage provided by the carrier.
  • You can submit an insurance claim for most shipments 24 hours after an order has shipped and up to 120 days from the shipping date.
