Checkout preview

You can use checkout preview to understand how your market settings affect checkout for customers in a market. After you select a country or region and a sales channel with View as in the graph view on the Markets page, the most specific market that applies to that customer is highlighted. You can then add products to the checkout preview to review how that market affects product availability, prices, discounts, shipping options, taxes, and duties for the customer.

Checkout previews use your current market settings, but they're for testing only. They don't create a live cart, checkout, or order, and they don't change any of your settings in Shopify.

Considerations for checkout preview

Before you use checkout preview, review the following considerations:

  • Checkout preview is available only from the Markets graph view. To review product availability from the Products page instead, refer to review product availability by market.
  • To preview a cart for a company location, you need to use Shopify B2B and have the View companies permission.
  • Checkout preview isn't available for Point of Sale markets.
  • Checkout preview doesn't apply your theme, checkout customizations, or app blocks.
  • Subscription products and pre-order products aren't supported in checkout preview.
  • Products and details added to the checkout preview aren't saved. Exiting View as, closing checkout preview, or leaving the page clears any products, discount codes, shipping addresses, and shipping methods added to the preview.

Preview a cart for a customer

Select who you want to preview the cart for, and then add or edit products. You can preview by country or region and sales channel and, for B2B, by company location. You can also test a discount code and a shipping address in the same cart.

Shipping options, taxes, duties, and checkout totals update based on the customer's information, cart contents, and shipping address. You're prompted to add a shipping address so that accurate shipping options are listed for customers in the market. If you previewed a company location, then its address is used. To use a different address, allow one-time shipping addresses for that location. If you change the country or region in View as, then the shipping address is cleared, and you need to add an address for the new customer context. If you change the country in the shipping address, then the country or region in View as is also updated, and a more specific market might be highlighted.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click Graph view, and then click View as.

  3. Select the country or region and the sales channel that you want to view as. This determines which market settings apply to a customer who matches your selection.

  4. Optional: To preview a cart for a B2B customer, add a company location.

  5. In the checkout preview, click Add products, and then select the products that you want to include.

  6. Optional: To test a discount code, add the code:

    1. Optional: To copy a discount code for the market, click the discounts section on the market node. In the Market discounts panel, hover over the discount code, and then click the clipboard icon.
    2. Enter the code in the Discount code field, and then click Apply.
  7. To calculate shipping options and taxes, add a shipping address:

    1. Click Add shipping address.
    2. Enter an address, and then click Done.
    3. Optional: If more than one shipping option is available, then select a shipping method in the Shipping section of the checkout preview.

The checkout preview lists each product with the price that applies for the selected customer context, based on your market settings. You can change the quantity of a product or remove it from the cart. To change the products in the cart, click Edit products.

If a discount code applies, then the discount is listed in the preview, and the total amount is updated. If the code doesn't apply, then an error message explains why the code can't be used. For more information about how discounts work across markets, refer to discounts and gift cards in markets.

Checkout preview summary

The checkout preview summary lists what a customer in the market would pay for the products in the preview. The following list describes each part of the summary:

  • Subtotal: The total price of the selected products, after product discounts, in the currency of the market.
  • Shipping: The selected shipping method and rate. Add shipping address means that no shipping address has been added yet. Calculated at checkout means that the shipping rate is a carrier-calculated rate, or that the cart has multiple shipments. In both cases, the shipping amount is calculated at checkout. No shipping options for this address means that no shipping rates are available for that address in this market.
  • Taxes: The taxes that apply for a customer in the market, estimated from the shipping address that you added to the checkout preview. For more information, refer to tax estimation.
  • Total or Estimated total: Total is listed when every amount in the cart is final. Estimated total is listed when one or more amounts, such as taxes, are estimates that can change at checkout.

If the cart needs more than one shipment, then This cart has multiple shipments is listed. To review the shipping options for each shipment, click View cart on checkout.
