Delete your data

When using Shopify's services, you have choices regarding the collection and use of your personal data. If you deactivate your store, then you can also request that all personal data is erased from the store.

Requesting to have a store's data deleted from Shopify isn't the same as requesting the erasure of all personal data connected to you at Shopify. Store owners, including merchants and Partners, can request that all personal data on their deactivated stores be deleted. However, Shopify users of all types, including people who use Shopify services such as Shop or Shop Pay, can request that the personal data that Shopify has about them be erased.

You can access the personal data that Shopify has about you at any time. To receive a copy of your personal data, go to the Shopify Privacy controls and click Access my data to begin the process.

Erasing personal data from a deactivated store

If you choose to deactivate your store, then your store's information is guaranteed for 2 years, in case you decide to re-open your store. However, you can request the deletion of the personal data of your customers from your deactivated store before that timeframe.

Review the following considerations before requesting that your data be deleted:

  • Data can only be deleted from a deactivated store.
  • Deleting data applies to only the store you request to be deleted. If you have other active or inactive Shopify stores, then data in those stores isn't deleted.
  • After data is deleted, it isn't recoverable and the store can't be re-opened.
  • Only the store owner can request the deletion of a store's data. No other staff member can submit the request on the store owner's behalf.

To submit your request to delete your store's personal data, contact Shopify Support. Data is deleted within 14 days after a request is completed.

Erasing your personal data from Shopify

Your personal data includes but isn't limited to information such as your name, address, email address, and payment details from all your stores, as well as your Shopify account information not stored within a single store. Instructing Shopify to erase your personal data erases your personal data from all Shopify shops and accounts that you own.

Review the following considerations before requesting that your personal data be erased:

  • Personal data can only be erased after you've deactivated all stores and all accounts that are associated with your email address. You're prompted to confirm that all accounts are closed as part of the personal data erasure process.
  • After your personal data is erased, it isn't recoverable.

To request the erasure of personal data, go to the Shopify Privacy controls and click Erase my data to begin the process. It might take up to 30 days for Shopify to process your request. After the erasure request is complete, you receive a confirmation email and your personal data is deleted, generally within 10 business days.

Erasing customer data

If you're a customer of a Shopify merchant, then you must contact the business that you purchased from to request that they erase your personal data from their store.

If you're a customer using Shop or Shop Pay and want Shopify to erase the personal data that Shopify has about you, then go to the Shopify Privacy controls and click Erase my data to begin the process. When prompted for what type of user you are, select User of Shopify Services (including Shop or Shop Pay). Note that this doesn't erase your personal data from any merchant's stores that you've purchased from. To request that a merchant erases your personal data from their store, you must contact the merchant you purchased from directly.

If you're a Shopify merchant who has received a request from a customer to delete their personal data, then follow the steps to process a customer data request.
