Selling services or digital products

When you add a product to your store, you can specify that you are selling a digital product or service so that no shipping charges apply. If you're selling a digital product, then you'll also need to use an app to provide a download link to your product.

Note

Customers in the EU need to pay VAT on digital goods at the rate applicable in their own country regardless of where the seller is located. Make sure that your tax settings are correct to sell digital products to customers in the EU.

Remove shipping for a digital product

If you sell a digital download product or a service, then you need to remove shipping for that product.

Steps:

Desktop

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products.

2. From the Products page, pick a product or create a product.

3. Optional: If the product has variants, then click the variant that you want to edit.

4. In the Shipping section, click the This is a physical product checkbox to uncheck it.

5. Click Save.

iPhone

1. From the Shopify app, go to Products > All products.
2. Tap a product or create a product.
3. Optional: If the product has variants, then tap the variant that you want to edit.
4. Tap Shipping, and then tap the This is a physical product to deactivate the option.
5. Tap Save.

Android

1. From the Shopify app, go to Products > All products.
2. Tap a product or create a product.
3. Optional: If the product has variants, then tap the variant that you want to edit.
4. Tap Shipping, and then tap This is a physical product to deactivate the option.
5. Tap ✓.

Tip

You can also use the bulk editor to deactivate the Requires shipping property for multiple products or variants at one time.

Digital download apps

To provide a download link to your customers for a digital product, you must use an app from the Shopify App Store. For example, the Shopify Digital Downloads app is a free and simple app that you can use.

Other third-party apps are also available on the Shopify App Store. Choose the app that best suits your needs.

Configure email templates

After you have configured a digital product or service, you might want to customize your email templates so that customers will know what to expect with their order:

• When selling a digital download, most digital download apps will send an email with a download link to a customer.
• When selling a service, you'll need to describe in the email template how the service works to ensure that your customers understand what you provide.
