Activate multi-origin shipping

The multi-origin shipping is activated to all new Shopify stores by default. If you can't create a shipping profile in your Shipping and delivery settings, then your store is using the single-origin shipping.

If you want to switch from the single-origin shipping to the multi-origin shipping, then you need to activate the multi-origin shipping manually.

Before you begin

There are a number of considerations you should be aware of before you activate multi-origin shipping.

Apps that control and edit shipping rates in the Shopify admin

Some shipping apps offer similar features as shipping profiles, such as per-product shipping rates, shipping rate merging, or shipping discounts. Each shipping app integrates with shipping profiles differently. Contact the developers of any shipping app that you use to learn how to integrate the app with multi-origin shipping.

Multiple locations for online order fulfillment

After you activate multi-origin shipping, your order fulfillment can be split between locations. If you have more than one active location that fulfills online orders, then your orders are split for fulfillment in the checkout based on product inventory levels.

When the products in an order are in different shipping profiles or need to be shipped from different locations, a shipping or delivery fee is calculated for each item and then all the shipping fees are added together. The customer is shown only the final shipping cost at checkout. For more information on how rates are added together, refer to Combined shipping rates.

No locations for online order fulfillment

If you have no active locations that fulfill online orders, then you can't activate multi-origin shipping. To change whether your locations can fulfill online orders, refer to Setting up your locations.

Step 1: Decide whether to activate multi-origin shipping

You can choose if or when you want to start using multi-origin shipping for your store. You don’t need to activate it immediately.

Consider activating multi-origin shipping if you run your store in the following ways:

  • You have multiple retail locations or places where you fulfill orders.
  • You ship online orders from one or more locations, which can include fulfillment service locations.

Step 2: Activate multi-origin shipping

If you decide to activate multi-origin shipping, then follow these steps.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.

  2. In the Shipping section, click Manage.

  3. In the Shipping origins section, click Activate multi-origin shipping.

  4. Click Continue.

  5. Click Save to create your new shipping profile.

  6. Click Save to confirm the activation of multi-origin shipping.
