Updating your shipping settings
The latest shipping settings are activated on all new Shopify stores by default. If you can't create a shipping profile in your Shipping and delivery settings, then your store is using the legacy shipping settings.
After you update to the latest shipping settings, you will be eligible to use the following features:
- Shop Promise
- Order Routing
- Flat rates with transit times
- Order prioritization based on fulfill by date
- Local pickup
- and more features to enhance your shop!

Before you begin
Apps that control and edit shipping rates in the Shopify admin
Some shipping apps offer similar features as shipping profiles, such as per-product shipping rates, shipping rate merging, or shipping discounts. Each shipping app integrates with shipping profiles differently. Contact the developers of any shipping app that you use to learn how to integrate the app with the latest shipping settings.
Multiple locations for online order fulfillment
After you update your shipping settings, your order fulfillment can be split between locations or you can continue to use one fulfillment location if needed. If you have more than one active location that fulfills online orders, then your orders are split for fulfillment at checkout based on product inventory levels. When the products in an order are in different shipping profiles or need to be shipped from different locations, a shipping or delivery fee is calculated for each item and then all of the shipping fees are added together. At checkout, the final shipping cost is displayed to customers. For more information on how rates are added together, refer to combined shipping rates.
No locations for online order fulfillment
If you have no active locations that fulfill online orders, then you can't use the latest shipping settings. To change whether your locations can fulfill online orders, refer to Setting up your locations.
Update your shipping settings if you run your store in the following ways
- You have one location you fulfill orders from.
- You have multiple retail locations or places where you fulfill orders.
- You ship online orders from one or more locations, which can include fulfillment service locations.
Updating to the latest shipping settings
To update to the latest shipping settings, follow these steps.
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
In the Shipping section, click Manage.
In the Shipping origins section, click Update shipping settings*.
Click Save to create your new shipping profile.
Click Save to confirm the activation of the latest shipping settings.
