Updates to revenue share for Shopify Theme Store developers

Starting September 15, 2021 at 10 am PST (1 pm EST), theme developers automatically have access to the reduced revenue share plan for themes sold through the Shopify Theme Store. In this plan, Shopify collects 0% of the first $1,000,000 USD in annual gross theme revenue earned through the Shopify Theme Store. Total theme revenues in excess of $1,000,000 USD annually are subject to a 15% revenue share, reduced from the previous 20%.

Review the following frequently asked questions about these updates.

Who is eligible to access the new revenue share plan?

All developers selling themes on the Shopify Theme Store are eligible for the reduced revenue share model. This applies to existing developers who already have themes listed on the Shopify Theme Store, and all new developers that are listed after September 15, 2021.

How will theme developers get access to the new revenue share plan starting September 15, 2021?

No action is required. All existing theme developers and new partner accounts created on or after September 15, 2021 automatically have access to the reduced revenue share plan.

Does this plan only apply to new themes that are compatible for Online Store 2.0?

This plan applies to all themes, regardless of whether they are compatible with Online Store 2.0 as of September 15, 2021.

Is gross theme revenue calculated retroactively for this year?

No. Gross theme revenue resets to $0 USD on September 15, 2021, and then resets annually on January 1 every year.

Is the 15% revenue share retroactive?

No. Partners pay 0% revenue share until gross theme revenue reaches the $1,000,000 USD threshold. After reaching the threshold, Partners pay 15% revenue share on the additional gross theme revenue earned after reaching the threshold only.

Does revenue from other Shopify sources count towards the threshold?

No. Other income, such as from the Shopify App Store, is not included in revenue share calculation for the Shopify Theme Store.

Example 1: A developer earns $750k on themes, and $750k on apps in a specific year. Because each of these are under $1M, they pay 0% rev share.

Example 2: A developer earns $1.5M on themes, and $750k on apps in a certain year. They pay 0% rev share on the first $1M from themes, and 15% on the incremental $500k in theme sales, but still pay 0% rev share on the $750k in app sales.

How do you calculate Theme Store revenue?

Revenues are calculated across themes, so the total revenues for the purposes of calculating the $1,000,000 USD threshold are determined per theme developer, which includes any Associated Theme Developer Accounts.

Example: Company A has Partner Account A and Partner Account B that each sell themes. Partner Account A has $800k in sales in a year, Partner Account B has 500k in sales for the year. We add the totals between the accounts ($800k+$500k = $1.3M). The Partner pays 0% on $1M, and 15% on the $300k.

What is considered an Associated Theme Developer Account?

An Associated Theme Developer Account is any Partner Account that a theme developer or Associated Theme Developer has registered through the Shopify Developer program page. An Associated Theme Developer is an individual or company that controls (owns 50% or more of) a theme developer, is controlled by a theme developer, is under another individual or entity’s common control with a theme developer, or is otherwise designated by Shopify as an Associated Theme Developer.

How will payouts be handled across multiple Associated Theme Developer Accounts?

Even though total gross theme revenue is calculated across all Associated Theme Developer Accounts, revenue share is still paid out separately at the Partner Account level.

Is there a fee to submit a theme for listing on the Shopify Theme Store?

No. At this time, we will not require a fee to submit themes for listing on the Shopify Theme Store.
