Payment methods

You can enable different payment methods in Shopify POS so that your customers have a choice of payment options at checkout.

Most of Shopify's supported card readers accept payment only from credit cards. If you want to accept payments by debit card as well, then you need to use the Moneris IPP320 terminal (available only in Canada with Shopify POS for iPad), or enable external payments and use an external payment terminal.

Access the Payments settings

From the Payments settings screen, you can enable and disable payment gateways, payment methods, and gift cards.

To access the Payments settings screen, tap Payments from the Settings screen:

Enable Shopify Payments on your iPad

To use one of our card readers, you need to enable Shopify Payments or a supported third-party gateway. If you haven't enabled Shopify Payments in your Shopify admin yet, then you can do so from your iPad.

To view the Payments settings screen of your Shopify admin on your iPad:

  1. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

  2. Tap Enable Shopify Payments:

Your iPad's browser opens and you can then log in to the Payments settings screen of your Shopify admin. After you log in, you can enable Shopify Payments.

Accept swipe card payments under $25 without a signature

If your store's located in the United States and you're using Shopify Payments, then you can accept swiped card payments of under $25 without a customer's signature. This option is turned off by default, but you can enable it from the Payments settings of Shopify POS for iPad:

  1. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.
  2. Under ENABLED, Tap Shopify Payments (credit and debit):

  3. Enable the Skip customer signature under $25 option by tapping its toggle button:

Enable a supported third-party gateway (retail package only)

You can activate a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments if your store meets these requirements:

  • your payment account is based in Canada or the United States
  • your payment account accepts both card present and card not present retail transactions
  • your Shopify plan includes the Shopify retail package
  • you're using a compatible credit card reader

Shopify POS supports only the following third-party payment gateways:

  • Authorize.net
  • First Data Payeezy
  • Mercury Payments
  • USA ePay

These third-party payment gateways are compatible only with certain credit card readers:

You might be charged additional payment processing fees if you choose a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments. Contact your payment provider to learn more.

To enable a supported third-party gateway for Shopify POS:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings, then click Payments (or press G S P).

  2. On the Payments page, deactivate Shopify Payments if it's enabled on your store.

  3. Activate one of the supported payment gateways. Your account with that payment gateway needs to be set up to accept both card present and card not present transactions—contact your provider directly to learn more.

  4. Enter the credentials for your payment account, then click Activate.

  5. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

  6. Enable the payment gateway by tapping its toggle button:

Enable payment by gift card

If your store is on the Shopify plan or higher, then you can enable payments by gift card in Shopify POS for iPad.

Note

Make sure that you've activated the gift card feature on your store before you try to enable gift cards for Shopify POS.

To enable payment by gift card:

  1. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

  2. Tap Gift Card.

  3. Tap the toggle buttons to activate one or both of the following:

    • gift cards that you can print and email to customers
    • physical gift cards (you'll need to order a supply of these if you haven't already)

Order physical gift cards

If your store is on the Shopify plan or higher and you have the retail package, then you can buy physical gift cards from the Shopify Hardware Store.

To order a supply of physical gift cards from the Shopify Hardware Store:

  1. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

  2. Tap Gift Card.

  3. Tap Buy physical gift cards to view the Shopify Hardware Store, where you can choose your gift card design and specify the quantity that you want to buy:

Enable payment by external credit, external debit, or store credit

You can accept payment using an external card terminal and store credit. These payment methods are turned off by default, but you can enable them from the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

To enable payment by external credit, external debit, or store credit:

  1. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen. The External Credit, External Debit, and Store Credit payment methods appear under DISABLED:

  2. If you want to enable the External Debit or Store Credit payment methods, then do so by tapping their toggle buttons.

  3. If you want to enable External Credit payment method, then tap External Credit, enable the credit types that you want to accept by tapping their toggle buttons, and tap the back button:

Add a custom payment method

You can create custom payment methods and name them anything that you like, such as Bank draft or Check. Use custom payment methods for manual payments that aren't processed by Shopify.

To add a custom payment method:

  1. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

  2. Tap Add custom payment method:

  3. Enter a name for the method, then tap Done:

Delete a custom payment method

If you no longer want to use a custom payment method, then you can remove it permanently from the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

To delete a custom payment method:

  1. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

  2. Swipe the custom payment method left to reveal a Delete button:

  3. Tap Delete.

Disable a payment method

If a payment method is disabled, then it won't appear as an payment option at checkout.

To disable a payment method:

  1. On your iPad, go to the Shopify POS Payments settings screen.

  2. Under ENABLED, disable a payment method by tapping its toggle button:

The payment method appears under DISABLED. You can re-enable the payment method in the same way.

Translate payment methods

If your iPad is set to use a language other than English, then your payment methods will be translated. For example, if your iPad is configured for French, then your Payments settings screen will look like this:

You can also print your receipts in Danish, French, German, Portuguese, or Spanish, depending on your iPad's language settings. Your printed receipt will show translated content for fields such as Taxes and Total.

Accept credit payments

To use one of our card readers, you need to enable Shopify Payments or a supported third-party payment gateway. If you want to use a supported third-party gateway, then you'll also need to add the Shopify retail package to your Shopify plan.

If you don't have Shopify Payments or a supported third-party gateway selected in your Shopify admin, then the Credit button won't appear on the Select payment type screen of the Shopify POS app.

Note

If you aren't going to be using a supported card reader or payment gateway, then you can still accept card payments by using an external card terminal.

Accept swipe card payments under $25 without a signature

If your store's located in the United States and you're using Shopify Payments, then you can accept swiped card payments of under $25 without a customer's signature. This option is turned off by default, but you can enable it from the Shopify POS Settings screen:

  1. From the Shopify POS app, go to the Settings screen.
  2. Under Payments, enable the Skip customer signature under $25 option by tapping its toggle button:

Enable or disable payment methods

The Select payment type screen of Shopify POS for iPhone displays the payment methods that you've enabled on the Payments settings screen of Shopify POS for iPad. If you want to customize which payment methods appear on the Select payment type screen on your iPhone, then you need to log into Shopify POS on an iPad and enable the payment methods that you want to use.

Note

The Gift Card payment method won't appear on your iPhone because payments by gift card aren't available in Shopify POS for iPhone at this time.

Accept credit payments

To take credit card payments with the Swipe (audio-jack) card reader, you need to enable Shopify Payments (United States and Canada only), USA ePay, or Authorize.net (supported countries only) as your payment gateway in your Shopify admin.

If you activate Shopify Payments, USA ePay, or Authorize.net, and your store is based in the United States or Canada, then you can swipe credit cards using the Swipe (audio-jack) card reader. Outside the United States and Canada, you can use Authorize.net and enter credit card information manually.

Unlike the iOS version of Shopify POS, Shopify POS for Android doesn't need the retail package to use Authorize.net or USA ePay.

Accept swiped card payments under $25 without a signature

If your store's located in the United States and you're using Shopify Payments, then you can accept swiped card payments of under $25 without a customer's signature. This option is turned off by default, but you can enable it from the Shopify POS Settings screen:

  1. From the Shopify POS app, go to the Settings screen.
  2. Under Payments, enable the Skip customer signature under $25 option by tapping its toggle button:

Enable an external terminal in Shopify POS for Android

If you're using Shopify POS for Android and you have an external credit or debit card terminal, then you can enable the External Terminal payment method from the Settings screen of the Shopify POS app.

When you accept payment with an external terminal, Shopify POS tracks the transaction, but the payment is processed and collected by your external terminal provider.

To enable an external terminal:

  1. From the Shopify POS app, go to the Settings screen.

  2. Under Payments, tap the Enable external terminal toggle button:

  3. A message appears that explains that you're enabling a payment terminal that is not integrated with Shopify. Tap OK:

The External Terminal payment method is enabled and will be available as an option on the Select payment type screen during each transaction.
