Assigning a location to your device and enabling local tax rates

If you use Shopify POS at more than one address, then you can assign a location to each POS device. This makes sure that you apply the right taxes to your in-person orders and that you can track the orders placed each physical location.

If you're using Shopify POS for iPad or iPhone, then you can also enable the app to retrieve local tax rates automatically using your device's GPS and wi-fi.

Note

You must add each location in your Shopify admin before it will be available in Shopify POS.

Assign a location to your iPad

To assign a location to your iPad:

  2. Go to the Shopify POS app Settings screen on your iPad.

  3. Tap General to access the general settings.

Did you know?

If you're using Shopify POS with the retail package, then you can restrict access to the locations settings on the iPad by enabling limited staff permissions.

Automatically retrieve local tax rates

If you enable the Automatically retrieve local tax rates option, then Shopify POS uses your iPad's wi-fi and GPS to apply local tax rates automatically based on your current location. For example, if your store location is in LA but you're selling in San Francisco, Shopify POS will charge state tax only (and not county tax) since your transaction is made outside of LA county.

If this option is turned off, Shopify POS applies only the tax rates for the iPad's assigned location.

To retrieve local tax rates automatically:

  1. Go to the Shopify POS app Settings screen on your iPad.

  2. In the LOCATION section, enable the Automatically retrieve local tax rates option by tapping its toggle button:

    Local taxes ipad

Note

Even with local tax rates enabled, you need to make sure that you add any location where you sell is included on your shipping list so that Shopify POS can retrieve tax rates correctly.
