Creating, customizing, and managing markets

If your new market doesn't have a parent market, then your new market is created without customizations and behaves according to your store defaults. If your new market has a parent market, then it inherits customizations from the parent market.

Create a market

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click Create market.

  3. In the Name section, enter a name for your new market.

  4. Next to the name field, select the publishing status for your new market. Select Active to display the new market to customers as soon as it's created, or Draft to preview the market before displaying it on your online store.

  5. In the Includes section, click Add condition. This condition defines which of your customers the market is displayed to. For example, you can select a region such as United Kingdom, or a specific B2B company location.

  6. In the Inherited section, review the customizations for your new market. These settings are inherited from your store defaults, or from a parent market if the new market has one.

  7. Optional: Click the + icon next to a setting to change it. After you make a change to these settings, they're moved from the Inherited section to the Customized section. Learn more about customizing markets.

  8. Click Save.

Customize market settings

When you create a market, you can leave the settings as inherited from their parent market or from the store defaults. You can customize these setting per market either during market creation or at any time afterwards:

Delete a market

When you delete a parent market, submarkets associated with that market no longer inherit settings.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Markets.

  2. Click the market that you want to delete.

  3. Click More actions, and then click Delete Market.

  4. Review the deletion message, and then click Delete.

Determining customer experience with Markets

It's possible to create markets in a way that a customer matches more than one market. When this happens, there might be multiple customizations that apply to the customer's experience. These customizations are resolved into a single customer experience.

When you create markets with a parent-submarket relationship, submarkets markets inherit the customizations of their parent market by default, when no customizations are present on the child. When you add customizations to children markets, some will combine with their parent, and some function as overrides.

Customer experience with currency in Markets

Submarkets inherit the currency value of their parent markets by default. Submarket currency customizations override the customizations in the parent market.

If a submarket has more than one parent market with different currency customizations, then the currency that best matches the customer's local currency is priorities. If none of the currency customizations match the customer's local currency, then the prioritization of the parent currency customizations are as follows:

  1. Rounding is activated, foreign exchange rate is manually specified.
  2. Rounding is activated, foreign exchange rate is automatic.
  3. Rounding is deactivated, foreign exchange rate is manually specified.
  4. Rounding is deactivated, foreign exchange rate is automatic.

Customer experience with catalogs in Markets

Submarkets inherit the catalog of their parent markets by default. Submarkets catalog customizations are combined with the catalogs of parent markets of the same market type. However, submarkets catalog customizations override the catalog customizations of parent markets of a different market type.

For example, if you have a B2B submarket that inherits customizations from both a regional market and a B2B market, then catalog customizations are combined with the B2B market and override customizations from the regional market.

If the same product is in a parent catalog and a submarket catalog that are combined, but have a different price, then the more specific price is chosen (the catalog price on the submarket).

If a submarket has more than one parent market with different catalogs, then the catalogs are combined. If the same product exists in the catalogs of both parents and the prices are different, then the lower price is displayed to customers.

Customer experience with the online store in Markets

Submarkets inherit the online store customizations of their parent markets by default. Submarket online store customizations combine with the online store customizations of parent markets of the same market type. However, submarket online store customizations override the catalog customizations of parent markets of a different market type.

For example, if you have a B2B submarket that inherits customizations from both a regional market and a B2B market, then online store customizations are combined with the B2B market and override customizations from the regional market.

Customer experience with domains and languages in Markets

Submarkets inherit the domain and language customizations of their parent markets by default. Submarket domain and language customizations override the domain and language customizations of their parent. If a submarket has more than one parent market, and those parent markets have different domain and language customizations, then the submarket inherits all of those customizations. Customers on the online store stay on the same domain throughout their session.

Customer experience with business entities in Markets

Submarkets inherit the business entity customization of their parent markets by default. Submarket business entity customizations override the business entity customizations of their parent markets. If a submarket has more than one parent market, and those parent markets have distinct business entities, then customizations are based on the first business entity in alphabetical order.

To avoid payments being processed through an incorrect business entity, ensure that your submarkets are inheriting the expected business entity, or add a business entity customization to the submarket.

Customer experience with duties and taxes in Markets

Submarkets inherit the duties and taxes customization of their parent markets by default. Submarket duties and taxes customizations override the customization of their parent markets. If a submarket has more than one parent market, and those parent markets have distinct duties and taxes customizations, then the customization selected is the one that's best suited to a customer based on their location.
