Selecting and switching editors to customize printed receipts

You can customize the template for your printed receipts with either the visual editor or the code editor.

Considerations

Review the following considerations for selecting an editor to use to customize your printed receipts, and for switching between editors.

Considerations for selecting an editor

Review the following differences between editors:

  • Customizations made in the visual editor apply to all types of printed receipts, such as sales receipts and gift receipts. You can use the code editor to customize specific types of receipts.
  • You can choose to apply changes to a single location or all locations in the visual editor. Customizations made in the code editor automatically apply to all locations. However, you can add conditions to display customizations for specific locations. Learn more about using control flow tags with Liquid.
  • When the code editor is active, you won't be able to make any customizations to your receipt template from the Shopify POS app.
  • Access printing options directly in the visual editor, or from the Point of Sale channel settings or POS app when the code editor is active.

Considerations for switching between editors

You can switch between the visual editor and code editor to customize your printed receipts. Review the following considerations for switching code editors:

  • The active editor applies to both your Shopify admin and the Shopify POS app at the same time. For example, if you switch to the code editor in your Shopify admin, then when you open your POS app, the available settings are reflected in the Shopify POS app.
  • You can switch between editors only from the Shopify admin.
  • You can use the code editor only from your Shopify admin on desktop.
  • The code editor applies only to POS Pro locations. If you use the code editor and have POS Lite locations, then you can use the visual editor to customize the header and footer for your Lite locations.
  • Your customizations are saved separately for each editor and preserved when you change editors. For example, if you add SKU information to your receipts in the visual editor, and switch to the code editor, then the SKU isn't displayed in your receipts. However, if you switch back to the visual editor, then the setting to display the SKU is still activated in the visual editor and displays on your receipts.

Switch to the code editor

You can switch to the code editor to make changes to your printed receipt templates with HTML, CSS, and Liquid.

You must have at least one location with the Shopify POS Pro subscription to use the code editor. If you use the code editor and have POS Lite locations, then you can use the visual editor to customize the header and footer for your Lite locations. Learn more about using the code editor.
