Setting up your domain with 1and1.com

If you have a domain from 1and1.com, then you need to reconfigure your DNS settings to point the domain at your Shopify-hosted online store.

Before you set up your 1and1.com domain

Before you follow these instructions, you should be familiar with the general procedure for modifying your DNS settings. You'll also have to add your domain in your Shopify admin.

Configure your root domain in 1and1.com

To set up your domain with 1and1.com:

  1. Log in to your 1and1 account.

  2. Click Domains:

    Click domains
  3. Select the domain you want to configure.

  4. On the details tab, click Adjust destination

  5. Click edit on the DNS Settings card:

  6. In the A/AAAA and CNAME Records section, select Other IP address:

    Click other ip address
  7. In the IPv4 Address box, type Shopify's IP address, 23.227.38.32Copy

  8. Click Save.

  9. Confirm that you want to modify your DNS settings by clicking Yes:

    Click yes to confirm

Create a subdomain in 1and1.com

After you've configured your root domain, you can set up subdomains. To do so, you need to create a subdomain, and then edit the CNAME record to make sure that it points to your store.

To create a subdomain:

  1. Log in to your 1and1 account.

  2. Click Domains:

    Click domains
  3. Select the domain you want to create a subdomain for, then click the Subdomains tab:

  4. Click Add subdomain on the Create Subdomain card:

  5. Enter the prefix for your subdomain. For example, you might choose shop, www, or store:

  6. Click Save.

You've created a new subdomain. Now you need to edit your CNAME record to make sure that the subdomain points to your store.

Edit your CNAME record in 1and1.com

After you've created a subdomain, you need to point it to your Shopify store by editing the CNAME record.

Note

It can take up to 48 hours for changes to take effect.

To edit your CNAME record:

  1. Log in to your 1and1 account.

  2. Click Domains.

    Click domains
  3. Find the domain you created a subdomain for, and click to expand the Actions menu:

  4. Click Manage Subdomains, then select the subdomain you want to edit.

  5. Click Modify DNS Settings on the subdomain's Details tab:

  6. In the A/AAAA and CNAME Records section, select CNAME:

    Select cname
  7. In the Alias box, enter the .myshopify.com address that you chose for your Shopify store:

  8. Check the box next to I am aware and accept that all current DNS settings, e-mail addresses and redirects will be disabled:

    Click checkbox to agree to current dns settings
  9. Click Save.

  10. Confirm that you want to modify your DNS settings by clicking Yes:

    Click yes to confirm
  11. Click Verify connection in your Shopify admin to confirm that your custom domain has been connected to your store.

Caution

If you are unable to edit your DNS records from within your domain provider's admin section, then you must contact 1and1 support.
