Fraud analysis

Shopify's fraud analysis checks all orders on your store for potential fraud. The fraud analysis uses machine learning algorithms that are trained on historical transactions across all Shopify stores. Shopify continuously improves these algorithms to better understand the difference between fraudulent and non-fraudulent orders.

If the fraud analysis flags one of your orders, then you should investigate the order before you fulfill it. You can also set up manual payment captures to give yourself time to investigate orders before you fulfill them.

If you're on the Basic Shopify plan and you aren't using Shopify Payments, then you can see a basic fraud analysis for each of your orders. If you're on the Shopify plan or higher, or you're using Shopify Payments, then you can see an enhanced fraud analysis.

The basic fraud analysis gives you a list of information about an order. This can include the number of credit cards the customer tried to use, or whether the customer’s physical address and IP address match. If something about the order seems unusual to you, then you can investigate the order.

The enhanced fraud analysis gives you a list of information about an order, as well as a risk level. The risk level is determined by Shopify's machine learning algorithms. The higher the risk level, the more likely it is that the order is fraudulent.

To view the enhanced fraud analysis for an order:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders.

  2. Click the number of the order you want to see:

    A flagged order

Suspicious orders are flagged with an exclamation mark next to the order number.

On the order page, you'll see a section called Fraud analysis:

If you are using a third-party fraud analysis app, then you'll see the app's recommendations below the Fraud analysis section.
