Using the image editor

You can use the photo editor to edit and resize images that you have uploaded to Shopify.

Photo editor

Within the photo editor, you can crop and resize images, change their orientation, adjust colors and other settings, and apply effects.

Open the photo editor

You can use the photo editor to edit product images from the product's details page. You can edit other image files that you've uploaded to Shopify from the Files area.

To open the photo editor, position the cursor over an image to see its options, and then click the Edit image icon:

Crop an image

You can crop an image to remove part of the image. This is useful when you want to display only a part of the image, or when you need to change the image's aspect ratio.

To crop an image in the photo editor:

  1. Click Crop.
  2. Frame the area of the image that you want to keep:
    • If you want to crop the image into a square, then choose a size. You can click and drag the corners of the square to resize it, or click inside the square and drag it to a different position.
    • If you want to crop the image into a rectangle, then enter a custom width and height. If you want to resize the rectangle without changing the aspect ratio, then click Lock Dimensions. You can click and drag the corners of the rectangle to resize it, or click inside the rectangle and drag it to a different position.
  3. Click Apply to crop the image.
  4. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Image aspect ratio

An image's aspect ratio is the ratio of its width to its height. For example, an image that is 200px by 400px has an aspect ratio of 1:2. An image that is 150px by 450px has an aspect ratio of 1:3.

Images can be different sizes and still have the same aspect ratio. To calculate whether images have the same aspect ratio, divide each image's width by its height, and then compare the results.

Using a consistent aspect ratio for all the images of a particular type will make them display better side by side, because they'll all display as the same size. For example, if you want your product images to display as the same size within a collection, then they need to have the same aspect ratio:

You can use a the photo editor to crop your images to have the same aspect ratio.

Resize an image

You can resize an image to change its actual size.

To resize an image in the photo editor:

  1. Click Resize.
  2. Enter the new width for the image. The height will automatically update to keep the same aspect ratio. If you want to resize the image without keeping the same aspect ratio, then click the lock icon to open it. Resizing your image with the lock icon opened will distort your image.
  3. Click Apply to add changes.
  4. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Change an image's orientation

You can flip or rotate an image to change its display orientation. You can also tilt the image within its frame.

To rotate, flip, or tilt an image in the photo editor:

  1. Click Orientation.
  2. To change the image's orientation:
  • Click the arrows above Rotate to turn the image clockwise or counterclockwise.
  • Click the Mirror buttons to flip the image vertically or horizontally.
  • Click and drag the arrows above the image to tilt it left or right within its frame:

  1. Click Apply to change the image's orientation.

  2. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Reduce redeye in an image

Sometimes, when you take a picture of a person or animal, the eyes reflect light with a reddish glow. You can use the photo editor to reduce redeye.

To reduce redeye in the photo editor:

  1. Click Redeye.
  2. Select the brush size that is closest to the size of the eyes with redeye.
  3. Click the center of the eyes in your image.
  4. Click Apply to reduce redeye.
  5. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Remove blemishes in an image

If your image has small flaws in it, then you can use the blemish tool in the photo editor to blur the flaws.

To remove blemishes in the photo editor:

  1. Click Blemish.
  2. Select the brush size that is closest to the size of the blemish.
  3. Click the blemish in the image to blur it.
  4. Click Apply to remove blemishes.
  5. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Adjust an image's colors

You can change the saturation, warmth, tint, and fade of the colors in your image.

To adjust an image's colors in the photo editor:

  1. Click Color.
  2. Select from the color options:
    • Saturation adjusts the intensity of the colors.
    • Warmth adjusts the color temperature of the image.
    • Tint changes the colors of the image with a filter.
    • Fade adjusts the tonal balance of the image.
  3. Click and drag the slider to adjust colors.
  4. Click Apply to adjust colors.
  5. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Adjust the contrast, brightness, and white balance in an image

You can change the brightness, contrast, highlights, and shadows in your image.

To adjust an image's lighting in the photo editor:

  1. Click Lighting.
  2. Select from the lighting options:
    • Brightness adjusts the intensity of the light in the image.
    • Contrast adjusts the difference between the brightest and least bright parts of the image.
    • Highlights adjusts the brightest parts of the image.
    • Shadows adjusts the darkest parts of the image.
  3. Click and drag the slider to adjust the light in the image.
  4. Click Apply to adjust lighting.
  5. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Draw on an image

You might want to draw on an image to add a line, highlight part of the image, or add a design.

To draw on an image in the photo editor:

  1. Click Draw.
  2. Select a brush size and a color.
  3. Click and drag on the image to draw.
  4. Click Apply to add the drawing.
  5. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

You can use the eraser to remove all or part of a drawing. The eraser doesn't remove anything from the original image.

Add text to an image

You might want to add text to an image. For example, you might want to add a "Sale" label to a product image.

To add text to an image in the photo editor:

  1. Click Text.
  2. Select a font and a color.
  3. Click the text box to enter text.
  4. To adjust the size and orientation of the text, click and drag the arrows on the text box.
  5. To move the text box, click the arrows and then click and drag the text box to its new position.
  6. To add another text box, click Add Text.
  7. Click Apply to add the text.
  8. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Whiten an area of an image

Sometimes, you might want to whiten an area of an image, such as a person's teeth.

To whiten an area in the photo editor:

  1. Click Whiten.
  2. Select the brush size that is closest to the area that needs whitening.
  3. Click the areas that need whitening.
  4. Click Apply to whiten the area.
  5. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.

Apply an effect

The photo editor has several effects that you can apply to an image, like color filters and vignettes.

To apply an effect:

  1. Click Effects.
  2. Select one of the sets of effects.
  3. Select an effect to apply. A mini-slider appears on the selected option:

  4. To adjust the intensity of the effect, click the mini-slider to open a larger version. Click and drag the slider to adjust the intensity.
  5. Click Apply to apply the effect.
  6. When you're done making edits in the photo editor, click Save.
