Importing your products with a CSV file

Importing products is useful if you switched to Shopify from another ecommerce site or if you want to make many changes to your products or inventory.

When importing products, Shopify extracts product data from your CSV file and turns them into products in your shop.

Before you begin

Before you begin, make sure you've read:

Caution

Importing a CSV file that has been sorted by a spreadsheet editor such as Microsoft Excel or Numbers will cause your products to be removed from their relevant image links on the CSV, and your product's images will be lost.

Import products from another store

To add products from another platform through your Shopify admin:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products (or press G P P):

    Products

  2. Click Import:

    Import products

  3. Check to see if the e-commerce platform that you're importing from is listed. If it is, click their icon to get the free importer from Shopify. On these pages, you will find instructions detailing what you need to do to import your products into your Shopify store:

Click Cancel if you don't see your platform icon:
    Import platform cancel

  4. If your preiovus platform provided you with a CSV file, compare your CSV file to the example shown here. The CSV file format must match in order for your product to be uploaded to Shopify successfully.

If you are creating your CSV file, click sample CSV template to see an example of the format required. Make sure to match the order on that CSV file to yours so that it can be successfully uploaded to Shopify.

  5. If you have an existing CSV file, click Choose File:

    Csv choose file

  6. Locate your CSV file, then click Open.

  7. Click Upload file:

    Csv upload file

Note

Your product CSV can't exceed 15MB. If you get an error when trying to upload a new CSV file, check to make sure it doesn't exceed this size limit.

If your CSV file was successfully uploaded you should receive an email from Shopify to the email account used to setup your Shopify store, saying that the process was successful. If you run into any issues, check out some solutions to common problems.

Import products after making changes to your CSV file

If you want to make changes to your products using a CSV file, then you must export your products first. You can make changes to your CSV file in a spreadsheet program, then import your updated CSV into your Shopify admin.

Note

Shopify recommends importing your CSV to Google Sheets to view and edit a formatted version of it.

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products (or press G P P):

    Products

  2. Click Import:

    Import products

  3. In the Import products by CSV file dialog, click Choose File:

    Csv choose file

  4. Locate your CSV file, then click Open.

  5. Click the Overwrite existing products that have the same handle checkbox. This will override any data that is currently up on Shopify.
