Importing your products with a CSV file

Importing products is useful if you switched to Shopify from another platform or if you want to make many changes to your products or inventory.

When importing, Shopify converts the data from the CSV file into products.

Before you begin

Before you begin, make sure you've read:

Caution

Importing a CSV file that has been sorted by a spreadsheet editor such as Microsoft Excel or Numbers will cause your products to be removed from their relevant image links on the CSV, and your product's images will be lost.

To add products from another platform through your Shopify admin:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products.

  2. Click Import.

  3. Check to see if the e-commerce platform that you're importing from is listed. If it is, then click their icon to get the free importer from Shopify. On these pages, you will find instructions detailing what you need to do to import your products into your Shopify store:

    If you don't see your platform icon, then click Cancel.

  4. If your previous platform provided you with a CSV file, then compare your CSV file to the example shown here. The CSV file format needs to match for your product to be uploaded to Shopify successfully.

    If you are creating your CSV file, then click sample CSV template to see an example of the format required. Make sure to match the order on that CSV file to yours so that it can be successfully uploaded to Shopify.

  5. If you have an existing CSV file, then click Choose File.

  6. Locate your CSV file, then click Open.

  7. Click Upload file.

Your product CSV can't exceed 15MB. If you get an error when trying to upload a new CSV file, then check to make sure it doesn't exceed this size limit.

When your CSV file is successfully uploaded you will receive a confirmation email from Shopify at the email account used to set up your Shopify store. Read some solutions to common problems.

Import products after making changes to your CSV file

If you want to make changes to your products using a CSV file, then you need to export your products first. You can make changes to your CSV file in a spreadsheet program like Google Sheets, then import your updated CSV into your Shopify admin.

To import your product CSV:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products.

  2. Click Import.

  3. In the Import products by CSV file dialog, click Choose File.

  4. Locate your CSV file, then click Open.

  5. Click the Overwrite existing products that have the same handle checkbox. This will override any data that is on Shopify.

  6. Click Upload file.

When your CSV file is successfully uploaded you will receive a confirmation email from Shopify at the email account used to set up your Shopify store. Read some solutions to common problems.

Tip

If you are having issues with uploading your CSV file, we recommend using the Google Chrome browser.
