Customer experience

Customers might interact with NFTs and tokengated products on a Shopify store to enjoy the following benefits:

  • Unlock exclusive offers through tokengated commerce or access to events.
  • Use an NFT as a membership token to participate in specific online communities on Discord, Twitter, or in person events.
  • Use an NFT as a certificate of authenticity for digital or physical products.
  • Purchase NFTs as digital collectibles.

NFTs and blockchains are generally new technology to many people, which could include your customers. You should set clear expectations for your customers regarding NFT purchases. This includes providing customers with FAQs about your NFTs, clear fulfillment and refund policies, and a contact page.

Purchasing NFTs

Similar to any other product on your Shopify store, a customer browses your store and adds an NFT to their cart. If you’ve been approved to sell NFTs through your Shopify store, then your customers can pay with a credit card through Shopify Payments, or with a supported cryptocurrency through a cryptocurrency payment processor. After the order has been confirmed, the customer has successfully purchased an NFT from your store.

After the order has been fulfilled, the customer receives an email with a link to an NFT claim page. After the customer provides their cryptocurrency wallet information on the NFT claim page, the NFT is minted and delivered directly to their wallet. This process is enabled by your NFT distribution app partner.

If the customer doesn’t have a cryptocurrency wallet, then they're guided through a wallet creation flow from the NFT claim page. Afterwards, the NFT is minted and delivered directly to their wallet.

Cryptocurrency wallets

A cryptocurrency wallet is required for a customer to interact with a blockchain. These interactions can include buying and selling an NFT, or verifying ownership of an NFT in the case of tokengated commerce. Cryptocurrency wallets are available on both desktop and mobile devices.

Traditionally, customers can log in to a Shopify store using their account credentials such as email and password to view their account information and past orders. As a merchant, you can segment your customers and their interests based on their order histories, and create marketing strategies around those assumptions.

With tokengated commerce, a customer can connect their cryptocurrency wallet to your Shopify store. After your tokengating app verifies their ownership of a specific NFT, the customer can access the tokengated product, discount, or other benefit that you’re offering. When a customer connects their cryptocurrency wallet to your store through a tokengating app, they are sharing information with your store, such as the NFTs that they've collected. This can help you understand your customers' interests, and create marketing strategies using this information.

Examples of supported cryptocurrency wallets include:

In all blockchain interactions, the user is prompted to connect their cryptocurrency wallet to an app or website. Every transaction needs to be confirmed by the customer before it’s processed.
