Searching for products and filtering your product list

You can view a list of your products on the Products page in Shopify. To help you stay organized, you can search for a product, filter your products, or sort the list of products in a few different ways. These tools are especially useful if you have many products, and can be combined to help you view a specific product or set of products.

Filtering or sorting your products list will not affect how your products appear to customers in your online store. Instead, you can change the sort order for the products in a collection.

Sort your product list

By default, your product list is organized alphabetically (from A-Z) by product name. You can also sort your product list by inventory, product type, or vendor, and reverse the sorting order.

Sorting affects the order of the products in your admin. You can sort your products list to quickly find the products you need to edit, review, or update. For example, to see which of your products are running low in stock, you can sort your products list by inventory.

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products.

  2. To change how your products are sorted, click a column header. For example, to view all products sorted by inventory quantity, click the Inventory column header.

  3. If you want to reverse the sort order of your list, then click the small triangle beside the column header.

Filter your product list

By default, all your products are listed on the Products page in Shopify. You can filter this list to show a set of your products. You can filter products by Availability, Product type, Product vendor, or Tagged with. If you sell by using the Pinterest sales channel, then you can also filter products by publishing errors. Learn how to add tags to your products for using with filters.

Filtering your products list can help you find any products you need to edit, review, or update. For example, if you sell clothing, and want to view a list of only your t-shirts, then you could filter by product type and enter t-shirt. Only the products of that type will appear in the product list, and you can make any changes more quickly.

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products.

  2. Click Filter products to open a drop-down menu that lists the filtering options.

  3. Select a filter option. For each filter option, you need to add the specific conditions for the filter:

  • To filter by Availability, select one of your active sales channels in the second drop-down menu to see the products that are available to that sales channel.
  • To filter by Product type, select one one of your product types in the second drop-down menu.
  • To filter by Product vendor, select one of your product vendors in the second drop-down menu.
  • To filter by Tagged with, enter the name of one of your product tags.
  1. Click Add filter.

All the products matching this condition will appear in the filtered list.

You can add more than one filter condition. Only products that match all of the conditions will display in the filtered list.

Search for a product

You can use the search bar on the Products page to find products that have a search term in their title or description.

To search in your products:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products.

  2. Enter your search term into the field labelled Start typing to search for products. The search will find your search term in product titles and descriptions and display a list of products containing that term.

You have the option to save a product search with the filters and search terms applied. The search is saved to a tab on the Products page, for quick access when you need to run the search again:

Products search 1

After you set up your filters or search for a term, click Save this search and give your search a name.

Next time you need to search that query, click the tab labelled with the search name. The search will be applied to your product list to display a list of products matching that search.
