Activate shipping with UPS

You'll need an account with UPS before you can activate this carrier service on your Shopify store.

Note

If your Shopify account is frozen at any time, your carriers might become deactivated. Check your shipping settings as soon as your account is restored.

Register for an account with UPS

Note

If you've negotiated a discounted rate with UPS, then you can enter your UPS account number when you activate your UPS service to give you the option of displaying discounted rates at checkout.

  1. Visit the UPS website and, from the drop-down list, choose the country where your store is located. Click the right-arrow to go to the next page.

  2. Click NewUser in the bar at the top of the page.

  3. Fill in the form as required. You can choose your own User ID and password. Make a note of them.

  4. Accept the Terms and Conditions, then click Next.

  5. When your registration is complete, make a note of your account number.

Note

If you have any problems with this stage of the UPS setup, you must contact UPS directly.

Obtain your XML Access Key from the UPS Developer Resource Centre

Before you request an XML Access Key, make sure that you've already registered an account with UPS.

To request an XML key:

  1. Log into your UPS account, then hover over Support in the menu bar at the top of the page.

  2. From the drop-down menu, click Technology Support:

  3. From the Technology Support Menu, click Developer Resource Centre:

  4. Select UPS Developer Kit from the Developer Resource Centre Menu:

  5. Click Request an Access Key:

  6. If you haven't yet opened an account, you'll need to do this now:

    If you had to open an account, you can now return to the UPS Developer Kit page and request the access key from Step 5.

  7. Make a note of your XML Access Key when you receive it (the key might be sent to you in an email.)

  8. Verify that the shipping rating you’re registering for is in Production mode.

Activate carrier-calculated shipping for UPS

Before you activate carrier-calculated shipping for UPS, make sure that you've already:

  1. registered for an account with UPS
  2. obtained an XML Access Key.

To activate carrier-calculated shipping for UPS:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings, and then click Shipping.

  2. You must first set up a shipping address, if you have not yet.

  3. In the Carrier-calculated shipping section, and click Manage carriers.

  4. On the Real-time carriers page, find the UPS section, and then click Activate.

  5. Enter your UPS User ID, Password, and XML Access Key (copy and paste them if you can, to avoid mistakes):

  6. If you've negotiated a discounted rate with UPS, enter your UPS account number in the Account Number field, and then check Use my negotiated rates. This makes sure that the discounted rates appear at checkout. You can find your UPS Account Number in the UPS Account Detail section of your UPS account:

If you haven't negotiated a discounted rate, then leave the Account Number field blank, and don't check Use my negotiated rates.

  1. Choose the pickup type from the drop-down menu (call UPS if you’re not sure which type you need).

  2. Click Save.

Display the complete list of UPS shipping rates

By default, not all UPS shipping rates are displayed for all pickup types.

To change this, follow these steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings, and then click Shipping.

  2. In the Carrier-calculated shipping section, and click Manage carriers.

  3. On the Real-time carriers page, find the UPS section, and then click Activate. This will show your UPS pickup settings. Different rates will be offered by different pickup types. For example, with US stores if the default selection on the drop-down menu is set to "Letter Center," then it will often not show rates for Ground Shipping.

  4. To change this setting so that ground shipping rates show up, select the Daily Pickup option.

  5. Save your changes.

  6. To view these rates and make sure it works, click Test this account:

  7. Enter a delivery address, and then click Test UPS Rates. This will test out what shipping services and rates will be offered to that location, using your pickup methods:
