Description of staff member permissions

You can grant staff permissions from your Shopify admin.

Staff member permissions provide your staff members access to specific parts of the Shopify admin and enable them to perform certain tasks.

The store owner can grant staff members full permissions, or else select the specific permissions required for each staff member's responsibilities. To learn more about assigning specific staff permissions to match staff responsibilities, read examples of staff permissions.

Store owner access

A Shopify store can have only one store owner, and it's usually the same person who opened the store. It's possible to transfer store ownership.

Although you can assign full permissions to a staff member, there are some tasks in the Shopify admin that are available to only the store owner.

The store owner is the person whose email and contact information were originally used to sign up for Shopify. Only store owners can perform the following actions:

Email communications from Shopify send to the email address associated with the store owner.

Full permissions

When you assign full permissions to a staff member, they can access all of the functions that are available in your Shopify admin, with the exception of those functions that require store owner access.

Full permissions include all of the following permissions that are available for your store:

  • General - Home, Orders, Draft orders, Products, Gift cards, Customers, Reports, Dashboards, Marketing, Discounts, Apps, Settings
  • Online store - Themes, Blog posts and pages, Navigation, Domains
  • Locations - Manage locations
  • App and channel access - Access to all apps is given by default

General

General staff member permissions
Permission Description
Home Enables the staff member to view the Home page, which includes sales information and data analytics.
Orders Enables the staff member to view the Orders page and to create, view, update, and delete orders and order notifications. Non-Shopify Plus staff members can export orders to a CSV file from the Orders page, but Shopify Plus staff members must be granted the Export orders permission.
Edit orders Enables the staff member to create, view, update, and delete orders and order notifications, and respond to customers in Shopify Ping.
Draft orders Enables the staff member to create, change, and delete custom created orders. Non-Shopify Plus staff members can export draft orders to a CSV file from the Drafts page, but Shopify Plus staff members must be granted the Export drafts permission.
Export draft orders

Available to: Shopify Plus

Enables the staff member to export draft orders to a CSV file.

Products Enables the staff member to view, create, and change products and collections. In addition, it enables the staff member to import products, and view and manage inventory. Non-Shopify Plus staff members can export products to a CSV file, but Shopify Plus staff members must be granted the Export products permission.
Export products and inventory

Available to: Shopify Plus

Enables the staff member to export products and inventory to a CSV file.

Gift cards Enables the staff member to create, view, and issue gift cards. In addition, it enables the staff member to export gift cards to a CSV file. Staff members who need to create or edit customers from the gift cards page must also be granted the Customers permission.
Customers Enables the staff member to view, create, edit, and delete customer records, and to respond to customer messages in Shopify Ping. Non-Shopify Plus staff members can export customer records to a CSV file, but Shopify Plus staff members must be granted the Export customers permission.
Export customers

Available to: Shopify Plus

Enables the staff member to export the customer records to a CSV file.

Reports

Enables the staff member to view reports, which include sales information and data analytics. In addition, this permission enables the staff member to create custom reports.

The staff member has access to all the reports. You cannot specify which reports the staff member can or cannot view.

Dashboards Enables the staff member to view the Overview dashboard, which includes sales information and data analytics for all sales channels. In addition, this permission enables the staff member to see the Live View page.
Marketing Enables the staff member to view, create, and automate marketing campaigns.
Discounts Enables the staff member to view and create discount codes and automatic discounts, and to export discount records to a CSV file.
Apps

Not available to: Shopify Plus

For Shopify Plus staff members, use the Apps and channel access permission.

Enables the staff member to use and delete all the apps and sales channels that are installed for the store. The staff member can install apps as long as their store permissions match the permissions that the app requires. For example, if an app needs access to orders, then the staff member needs the Orders permission to install the app.

Only the store owner can approve app charges.

Settings

Enables the staff member to see all the options on the Settings page. Staff members who are not granted the Settings permission see only Accounts or Plans and permissions. In addition, it enables the staff member to create webhooks to send data about the topics that the staff member has the permissions to view.

Only the store owner can view billing information or make changes to the store's subscription or banking information.

Online store

Themes Enables the staff member to change and publish the theme that the store is using.
Blog posts and pages Enables the staff member to create, change, publish, and delete blog posts and web pages, such as a contact information page.
Navigation Enables the staff member to create, change, and delete navigation buttons.
Domains Enables the staff member to buy and manage domain names.

Locations

Manage locations Enables the staff member to create, change, and delete locations where inventory is stocked or managed.

App and channel access

Available to: Shopify Plus

In Shopify Plus stores, you can control the individual apps and sales channels that your staff members access.

The app and channel access permissions only affect access to apps within your Shopify admin, and not in Shopify POS.

Give staff_member_name access to all apps and channels

Enables the staff member to use and delete the apps and sales channels that are installed for the store. The staff member is granted access to any newly installed apps automatically. The staff member can install apps as long as their store permissions match the permissions that the app requires. For example, if an app needs access to orders, then the staff member needs the Orders permission to install the app.

Only the store owner can approve app charges.

Select which apps and channels staff_member_name can access

Enables the staff member to use only the apps and sales channels that the staff member has permissions for. When a new app is installed, the staff member can't use it until they are granted permission to that app. The staff member can't install or remove apps or sales channels. The staff member can see only the apps that they have permission for.

The staff member can see all the sales channels, but they can access only the sales channels that they have permissions for.
