Organizing your themes

By working with the files that make up your theme, you can make changes to themes, move them between stores, or create backups. As you gain experience with themes, you'll quickly find your own preferred methods for working efficiently.

You can't exceed the limit of 20 installed themes at any time.

Export themes

You can export a theme and download it to your computer if you want to:

  • work on it using a different theme editor
  • save it for later use if you've reached the limit of 20 installed themes

To export a theme:

  1. Find the theme you want to export, click Actions and then click Download theme file:
Download theme file

The theme is sent to you in a zip file to the email associated with your staff account.

When you've successfully exported your theme, it's safe to delete it from your store.

Import themes

You can import a theme by uploading a zip file containing a theme. You might do this if you have:

  • a downloaded theme which is not available in the Theme Store
  • previously exported a theme to your computer for editing

To import a theme:

  1. Click Upload theme:

    Theme upload button
  2. Click Choose File and select the .zip file containing theme you want to upload from your computer.

  3. Click Upload to upload the theme:

    Theme uploader

Themes and other uploaded files have a 50 MB file size limit. If you get an error uploading a new theme, make sure that the .zip file is smaller than the 50 MB file size limit.

When you've successfully uploaded the theme, it will appear within your store's theme menu as an unpublished theme.

Shopify will automatically detect whether the .zip file you are uploading is a valid theme or not. If your theme does not contain valid template files, your file will not upload.

Duplicate themes

It's a good idea to make a backup copy of your theme before you make any customizations, so it's easy to discard your changes and start again if you need to.

To duplicate your theme:

  1. Find the theme you want to copy, click Actions and then click Duplicate:

    Themes duplicate

When you reach the limit of 20 installed themes, the Duplicate option will be grayed out and you'll have to delete a theme before you can continue.

Delete themes

You can delete any theme except your published theme (the one that's live on your store).

To delete a theme:

  1. Find the theme you want to delete, click Actions and then click Delete:

    Themes delete
  2. Click Delete to confirm your choice.

Deleting your published theme

If you want to delete your current theme, you need to publish another theme first to replace it. When the unwanted theme has been unpublished, you can follow the steps above to remove it from your Themes page in the admin.
