Affiliate tracking

You can track the success of your affiliate links and campaigns on the Affiliate tools page in your Partner Dashboard. From there, you can create new affiliate links, see your total earnings from Shopify's affiliate program, and compare results from different affiliate campaigns.

Affiliate tracking overview

Instead of sharing the same affiliate link everywhere, you can use unique affiliate links for different applications and platforms. This lets you easily track the links that refer the most clients.

Affiliate links are tracked based on campaigns. Each campaign includes affiliate links that contain UTM parameters. You can use these parameters to identify where and how each affiliate link will be used. Affiliate links support Google's UTM parameters and two custom Sub id parameters.

For example, you decide to create a "spring promo" campaign, which you want to promote both on your business website and on Facebook. From your Partner Dashboard, you create two separate affiliate links as part of this campaign:

  • The first link is the one that you embed on your business website. Create the link with the Campaign name set to spring-promo, and the Source set to website:
    First example
  • The second link is the one that you embed on your Facebook page. Create the link with the Campaign name set to spring-promo, and the Source set to facebook:

After the links are published, you can track their performance on the Affiliate tools page in your Partners Dashboard.

To create an affiliate link:

  1. From your Partner Dashboard, click Affiliate tools.
  2. Click Create affiliate link.
  3. On the Create an affiliate link page, enter the following information:

    • Campaign name - The name of the affiliate campaign that will include this affiliate link. Each campaign can include multiple affiliate links.
    • Content - The content that will be associated with the affiliate link. For example, welcome-email or banner-ad.
    • Source - The source of the traffic, based on where you will share your affiliate link. For example, home-page or facebook.
    • Sub id - A custom parameter for differentiating between multiple versions of your affiliate link. You can use sub ids to segment or track referral traffic in ways that supplement the other available parameters.
    • Medium - The marketing medium where you will promote the affiliate link. For example, social or sponsored-link.

This information makes it possible to track different affiliate campaigns. Since this information is used in the URL of your affiliate link, you can't use spaces or special characters in these descriptions.

  4. When you're done, click Copy to copy the affiliate link. You can then paste it into your campaign.

View an affiliate campaign

To view an affiliate campaign:

  1. From your Partner Dashboard, click Affiliate tools.
  2. Click the name of the campaign that you want to view. If it doesn't appear on the Affiliate tools page, then click View all campaigns and select it from the All campaigns page.

On the campaign page, you can see results for each affiliate link that's associated with that campaign. Each link is ranked based on the following properties:

  • Clicks - The number of people who clicked the affiliate link.
  • Trial signups - The number of people who signed up for a trial after clicking the affiliate link.
  • Paid conversions - The number of people who signed up for a paid Shopify plan after clicking the affiliate link.
  • Earnings - The amount of commission that you've earned from merchants who signed up for Shopify from the affiliate link.

The best way to promote your affiliate links is by using them in content that you create and share. For example, you can share your affiliate links in videos, blogs, or email newsletters that discuss e-commerce, entrepreneurship, or Shopify. The affiliate link can be surfaced in a text hyperlink, or associated with visual assets like a banner or the Shopify logo.

However you decide to share your affiliate links, make sure that you're familiar with the following guidelines:

  • Shopify Affiliates must adhere to FTC requirements, and disclose to their audience that they are Shopify Affiliates.
  • Direct linking and trademark usage are not allowed in paid advertising as per the Partner Terms of Service Agreement (see Section 2.5, paragraphs 7 and 8).
  • Shopify Affiliates must avoid cookie stuffing.
