Buy and print shipping labels

You can buy shipping labels when you're fulfilling an order in your Shopify admin or the Shopify app. After you've bought a label, you can print or void it from the order page. The tracking number for your shipment will appear in the Fulfillment section of an order's information page in Shopify.

You can print a test shipping label to make sure that your printer is set up properly. You will not be charged for printing a test label.

To print a test label:

The cost of shipping labels is based on the rates offered by USPS or Canada Post. You can view the differences in rates across available mail classes from an order's Fulfillment page.

To buy a shipping label:

After you buy a shipping label, the cost is billed to you through your Shopify account. The total price will appear on your invoice and includes any applicable taxes and fees.

The cost of Canada Post shipping labels is displayed in CAD, but converted to USD when you are billed through your Shopify account.

Not all packaging types are eligible to receive a USPS tracking number. For example, package tracking isn't supported for the First Class Large Envelope (flat) package type. To learn more, compare the services that USPS offers for each packaging type (click Quick Compare).

After you've bought a shipping label, you need to print it out and affix it to the outside of the package you want to ship. If you're shipping internationally, then your package might need a separate customs declaration form too.

You can print shipping labels using a supported label printer, or you can print them using a desktop printer and affix them to the outside of your package using a plastic sleeve or packing tape. If you need to change the format of a shipping label after you've purchased it, then change the label format in your Shipping settings, and reprint the label.

To print a shipping label:

Buy and print multiple shipping labels

You can buy and print up to 20 shipping labels at a time in bulk from the Orders page in your Shopify admin.

Some orders won't be included when buy shipping labels in bulk. For example, if an order contains only items that do not require shipping, if it doesn't have a valid shipping address, or if it is already fulfilled, then it won't be included in a bulk label purchase. If an order has already been partially fulfilled, then only the unfulfilled items are included in the bulk label purchase.

To buy multiple shipping labels:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Orders.

  2. Use the checkboxes to select up to 20 orders that you want to buy shipping labels for. If you select more than 20 orders, then the excess orders won't be included in your shipping label purchase.

  3. In the Actions drop-down menu, click Create shipping labels:
    Create multiple shipping labels
  4. On the Create shipping labels page, enter the shipping details for each order. You can do the following:

    • Choose the quantity of items in the order that you want to fulfill. If you want to exclude an item from the order or partially fulfill it, then reduce its quantity to zero.
    • Select a package type and enter a weight for your shipment. By default, the weight of each shipment is calculated based on the products in the order and the weight of the package. You can see the updated total price of your shipping label purchase in the Summary section.
    • Select a shipping service, and any relevant shipping add-ons (such as signature confirmation).
    • Remove an order from the shipping label purchase by clicking the ... button beside the order number, and then clicking Remove order.
Notifications will appear at this step for each order whose information isn't complete. For example, if your customer's address can't be verified in its current format, then click Edit shipping address to edit the information:
    Resolve shipping errors
  5. In the Shipping date section, select the date when you will send the shipment. By default, the present date is selected. The date that you select here applies to each label in your shipping label purchase.

  6. Confirm the details of your shipping label purchase in the Summary section. Make sure that the label format matches the printer that you plan to use. If you want to change the format of the shipping labels, then click Change beside Label Format. You can also change the format of your shipping labels after you purchase them.

  7. When you're ready to buy your shipping labels, click Buy shipping labels. The orders that you bought shipping labels for will now be marked as Fulfilled or Partially fulfilled on the Orders page in your Shopify admin. Tracking information will be automatically applied to each order.

  8. If your orders will be delivered to international destinations, then your shipping provider might require you to print customs forms for your shipments. In the Customs information section for each international order on the Print shipping labels page, click the Print customs form button if it appears (if it doesn't appear, then the required customs information is included in the shipping label automatically). Depending on the shipment's destination or its mail carrier, you might need to print multiple customs forms. If you leave the Print shipping labels page before you print any required customs forms, then you'll have to print them individually from the Orders page in your Shopify admin.

  9. If you want to print your labels in bulk, then click Print shipping labels in the Summary section. This creates a new tab in your web browser that displays all the labels that you purchased, and opens the print dialog. If you leave the Print shipping labels page now, then you can't print the batch of shipping labels at once. Instead, you'll have to print the labels separately for each order from the Orders page in your Shopify admin.

In some cases, you'll need to make changes to shipping labels after you've purchased them:

  • You can void individual shipping labels after you've purchased them. You can't void shipping labels in bulk.
  • If you need to change the format of a shipping label after you've purchased it, then change the Label format in your Shipping settings, and reprint the label.

If you're shipping to an international destination, then you need to complete the customs declaration form on an order's Fulfillment page. Some mail types require that you print a separate customs form for your shipment, and others include the form on the standard shipping label:

  • If you use Priority Mail International or Priority Express Mail International, then you need to print a separate customs form in addition to the shipping label and affix them both to the outside of your package.
  • If you use First Class Package International Service, Priority Mail Flat International flat rate envelopes, or Priority Mail International small flat rate boxes, then the customs declaration is included in the shipping label itself.

To print an order's customs declaration form:

The customs declaration form will be printed with the shipping label.

Shipping label format

The format of a shipping label depends on which carrier and class you choose when you're buying a label. You can't edit the label format because each carrier has specific requirements for their labels.

If you purchase a label using Shopify Shipping, then it will include the order number that's in your Shopify admin. You can use the order number on the label to match packages to orders more easily. The placement of the order number varies between carriers:
Order number on USPS label
Order number on DHL Express label

Change your shipping label printer settings

If you print a shipping label using the wrong printer settings, then you can change your label settings to the correct printer type, and reprint the shipping label.

To change your shipping label settings:

  1. In the Shipping labels section, select the Label format that matches the printer you want to use:
    Shopify Shipping - printer type

Some labels can be printed only by a certain model of printer, so make sure that the type of printer that you choose at this step matches the one that you have:

8.5 × 11 inch paper for desktop printers Outputs the label in PDF file format. Choose this if you want to print labels on a desktop printer, or if you want to print two labels per page when you buy multiple shipping labels at once.
4 × 6 inch label for label printers Outputs the label in PDF file format. Choose this if you want to print labels using a label printer (Dymo, Rollo, or other).

After you've changed your label printer settings, you can reprint the shipping label whose format you want to change. You don't need to void and repurchase the label before you reprint it in the new format.

Void a shipping label

You can void a shipping label after you've bought it, as long as:

  • it's been less than 30 days since you bought the label
  • the package hasn't already been shipped by your carrier.

After you void a shipping label, the cost of the label is credited to your account. This amount will be applied to the cost of any shipping labels that you buy in the future.
